If you rode one, you would probably love it, it is a big size to manoeuvre around the garage/ though, I also like the Gilera Fuoco. Is that how you spell manoeuvre ? Ian

Years ago everyone did their own porting work with varying degrees of success or failure, but with the number of kits now available most people just buy a kit so it is nice to see that home porting still goes on, back in the day most porting jobs were either a mild tune and polish up or a very narrow power band! It was a bit trial and error/funny.

they appear to be more of a long distance tourer than shopping/commuter bike, but then a vespa GTS is a fair bit bigger and heavier than a PX too, I quite like them but not sure I would have one.

It is just not a proper vespa unless it has the smell and the sound! This is good news, as hopefully when everyone else goes electric there will be plenty of 200 engines for sale at sensible prices. It isn`t a cheap option but going to look a lot better than any new electric scooter out there, and electric is the way forward, that spare battery makes all the difference, not sure I will be rushing to do it though.

I quite like slightly odd stuff so I would consider one if price was right, probably paint it red and have a hammer and sickle on side panel, is that taking it too far? Big question is are spare parts available?

I would also take the 200cc motor every day of the week, and it too can be made faster if required, the 200cc engines are quite sought after and fetch strong money these days so go for it unless it is crazy money, after all you can buy a DR kit and performance exhaust for a less than £300.

In theory you should not sieze or overheat the engine if the piston/bore clearance is correct and the ring gap also correct and the carb set up properly, this may mean a rolling road carb set up to ensure mixture correct throughout the rev range. Remember I started this off with "in theory"

Reed valve technology is a bit more modern than rotary, so that would be the one to go for, I think even the later LML models used reed valve induction in their 2 stroke engines, Piaggio are not exactly famous for keeping their products up to date unless they have to due to legislation. After all the P range is directly descended from Rally models which had been around since late 60`s which were not that different from early 60`s models, but for me this is part of the attraction, bearing in mind there are a lot of 60`s Vespa models with PX engines fitted as they fit straight in and give performance and electrical improvements.

I would start with easy/cheap stuff, is there a chance exhaust is blocked? I would fit a new plug just as it is easy and cheap to do then maybe worth looking at other things like has stator plate moved, how good is compression, can you borrow a known good cdi to test, could you be drawing in too much air, always worth bump stating down big hill etc incase a kick start is just not enough for some reason, I would also consider a carb and jet clean, these are all fairly easy jobs that will not cost much so worth giving a go.

The complaint you have is common with helmet storage in modern auto scooters, and yet just a little more thought and they would fit! I do not like open face helmets and do not use them, but just my opinion.

I have recently seen a few vinyl wrap jobs that looked good and are removable if not wanted later, just something else to think about, possibly just the side panels.

Your jetting sounds to be in the ball park so start rich and work back from there. Gasket sealant is not required but lots of people use it anyway. Yes some oil helps the rings slide into barrel, I would just use 2 stroke.

I recently fitted a complete FA Italia clutch with uprated springs and it was a bit snatchy when moving off in first gear and it also made a strange noise that sounded like a screetch but it stopped after a couple of outings, I had taken it apart and soaked the plates in oil before use also.

If you just want to change piston and barrel in situ then you can remove the cylinder studs, however this method is considered by some to be unwise as when re fitting them there can be issues with how far into the engine case they end up. To do the job properly you need to remove the engine and you should probably also split the cases to make sure none of the molten aluminium from the piston crown ended up in the case next to the crank, this should be properly cleaned up before re-assembly, hole in the piston is from running too hot from being too lean a fuel/air mix. Some pistons marked on the top but probably easier to find out what kit it is running if any, and buy the correct piston from that kit maker, if it is standard iron barrel then you can buy a variety of piston sizes, need to measure what you have. no luck mate

I think there is an irony in having a high tech helmet with loads of electronic features when I am riding round on a stylish though ancient vehicle that is using old 2 stroke technology that has been pretty much outlawed due to it`s emissions, and if I tried to power it from my vespa it would probably make the lights go dim! Interesting though, one for the gadget lovers.

Hello RSJ, pictures would help to see overall condition, prices seem to be coming down just now, not sure if people are holding onto their money or older scooter riders are selling their manual gear change scooters to buy an auto, there are a lot of Scomadi and GTS Vespa out there now, they are more popular than ever. I still like an old 2 stroke though. From what you have described probably between £1600 and £2100 depending on how much interest you have for it and in 8 weeks the season will be over for many.

Hi Mij Firstly Piaggio did this for us by giving us ancient technology for years and only 7hp from a px125 when all the other 125cc 2 wheelers had 12hp, then made it even slower with a catalytic convertor, and secondly how long before someone has a plug and play black box that tells the car it is on the autobahn all the time and there is no speed limit? Nanny state!

If you are replacing the bolt that goes through the engine mount use one with a taper at the tip of the threads as it makes it easier to line up as it locates more easily.
