Thats a very good point! The shape of the top of the port! I can envisage how that would help too Tbh, i wasnt so confident i done the best job i could have on that port so as im going to de coke the head and crown anyway, i may as well pop the barrel off, port, once and for all!?!? I dont really want to drop the engine, and im still reluctant to wind the studs out of the cases once more but curiousity and a need to keep this motor sweet means that im going to have a busy weekend. Its not sounding right atm. Apart from the random pinking, it 'sounds' hot too! If it can. I realise a larger exh port will no doubt affect the sound too but its not running quite right either. If i make that thing peak at 7000rpm, my max power would be @ 70mph. Thats cool, but, thats a speed i rarely get a chance to do around here, as much as i love doing it and a speed which im less willing to cruise at on my 'starting-to-get-old' Rally. Mpg @ 60mph is ok. @ 70mph it soon hits reserve and my wallet. And i do really enjoy having the lower down power. The speedo stopped working the other day too. Although I think/hoping its just the cable that popped out, as the revs etc still work. The dyno above was made on the same stretch of road as the others that ive posted. I may not use this old airfield i found...its got bigger potholes than the roads. I need to stay closer to home anyway, to guard me buried treasures. Yah! Ill probably, when i get time, start another thread with what ive done porting wise. Im going to cut to the chase and sort out that port first. Then worry about pinking etc if it shows. I wont be riding it fast or far in the meantime

I hate taking the cylinder studs out of any scooter. Almost never do it. On a later PX it is possible to take the exhaust off, take out the shock bolt and lift the frame up enough to get the barrel off. Seen too many studs pop out of worn threads. The problem with yours is the 127 degree transfers. Probably ony needs 124. As you cant reduce the transfers there is little choice. Those 3 degrees would have made the differance. Shape of the exhaust port will help for now. Comparing this MD to the last, can't see that you have lost anything much low down yet, power band moved up 100 rpm, maybe

Well im going to go the cylinder stud removal method. Dropping the rear bolt etc would mean taking off carb , back wheel, oh! Am i getting lazy or what!? I will look into tho' before i start. Yup! That 127° is not so good but what to do!? Its not going to get any smaller. I just have to tune this to a happy compromise on the BlowDown. Im quite looking forward to seeing that port shaped off to suit my needs. Its difficult to say about the powerband,,, theres something there that i can feel kicking in early on, all be it very mildy, more like a little poke with a slipper than a kick tbh, but i kinda think this is also a symptom of being rich on the jetting. Taking a bit longer to pick up. (Im not convinced, on this occasion anyway, that the pinking is due to lean jetting) The power has definitely moved up a little. Im not convinced ive found the perfect stretch of road for these dynos yet either so im still relying on seat of the pants to tell me whats going on more than anything. Ive noticed on a certain stretch of almost flat road i get 'higher' results, closer to what i would expect, and the dynos gps top speed and revs matched my sip speedo and the gear calculator - 59mph @ 7700rpm. (Thats maxed out, in 3rd) the speedo did register 60mph. The 7000+rpm is easy to achieve and will rev slightly further than before I remember pulling into a strong wind, (in 4th) maxing out at around 63mph and just about staying there. So i tend to agree more so now, I think i could afford to go just a little higher/re-shape the port for good effect not toooo much tho'. Just move the power up, just a tad. I'll worry about cruising at 1/4 throttle at 55+mph later ! When I'm happy with that and jetting and seat o pants results, the dyno will come out again. First, exhaust port-a-go-go Holy crap! No! I forgot, first sort my speedo cable out! I do hope thats all it is!! Actually no holey sheet, thats no.2 on the list

studs are used rather than bolts for a reason , repeated removal/replacement will wear out the threads in cases=oversize studs in whitworth threads , an also it can cause the ali around stud to be pulled up in miniture volcano like forms , its a common occurence on chain cases on brit-bike n lambretta cases ,especially where studs have been replaced by allen bolts , there it gives oil leaks ,on a base gasket its air leaks =pin pulled n grenade away, rock/hard place , barrel studs or carb n airbox , i'd go airbox an take off head an front bolt an lift rear of scoot up onto a box ,allowing front to swivel down enough to slide barrel off , also prob have to release selecter but thats jus 2 nuts an a twist, more risky for ya paint but less risky for engine/studs , H

I'll see tomorrow, depends which way the wind blows. The stud removal doesnt involve disconnecting anything other the the parts i want to disconnect! Theres no fear of paint damage. I painted it by roller brush with some agricultural paint...

jesus ,tractor paint , you need horse-whipping young man , tho it is close to rally orange isnt it , an will fess up, sprayed with synthetic enamel 1st time today ,usually brush bike frames but it took 1/6th of the time an looks brilliant , did wonder bout doing a scoot in it all over instead of just underneath/inside muddys, as its bullet proof ,well air rifle pellet proof , for once my useless brother moved fast an i hit a frame i'd painted ,wasnt on purpose but showed me how tuff that stuff is ,an ive used as underseal ever since , still not liking the roller application method tho, couldnt you find a stray dog/yard brush , you flat-landers an your funny ways ,H

I reckon she's a beauty. OK, we can't get a close-up inspection from a photo, but I'd rather see it looking worn-in, original than with thick, shiny, perfect paint on it, and to my untrained eye the colour looked right too. I thought it was original before you exposed yourself with the tractor paint.

Exactly.. From these photos at least, it looks almost original !! (Yes, the blue skies and suhshine help)! It shouldn't make any difference how it was painted. It looks ok through my eyes and keeps the Vespa on the road. So what if it cost me about £50 to paint and not £1000. If i spent that many $$$ on painting it I'd have to clean the bloomin- thing!!! Even 'bikers' liked that last photo, as it was voted a runner up in a photo competition on a motorcyclists website, Horizons Unlimited... www.horizonsunlimited.com/contest/2010-photocontest. I put it in as bit of a joke really! The siberian side car geezer, sounds an amazing journey, he should have definiately won! Looking back, it amazes me sometimes, to see my little vespa out there, in amongst all those big, expensive, fully kitted out, big money-backed bikes, and still end up a winner!! Hahaha! Hooray for the Vespa!!

That HorizonsUnlimited site has given me the Wanderlust again. Yours holds its own well amongst the big boys, though I also do especially like the photo of the bloke camping and brewing up on the ice. Ten years on the road! Blimey. Did you do yours solo? You traveled pretty light. Some time ago I stumbled across a site that had all the paint codes for Vespas; if I’m reading this right, and if I’ve got your scooter right (1972 Rally 200?), then there were several ‘reds’ – is that right? Do you know which is correct for your scooter? Just curious whilst wandering the Net earlier. don't know if that's interesting, or if you can read it - there's four MaxMeyer red codes?

Travel light. Its the simplest and the best. Most of my trip was solo. Although a mate of mine was going to Portugal in his van. I wanted a trip on my newly built vespa. So he followed me there, to portugal. not as back up, he was going to do some work there. He then took a c90 from portugal, aiming for morocco with me, but it was a long slog waiting for the knackered c90 to catch up. The Vespa was fine, kinda. The c90 wasnt so good and only just about made it to marrakesh, with a lot of persuasion. He sold the c90 in marrkesh and took a plane back to portugal! I rode back solo, leisurely. About 3 months all in all.. im gagging to go to Croatia/somewhere on it, hence my reason for playing it safe with the mods'. Until lately anyway! I looked into going further but you then need carnets, insurance, etc etc, which all costs a lot of money, which i didnt have. I started filming a parody of those muppets who done A long way down.... With like 30 people backing them up and free bikes, sponsors, etc. Although I called my trip, A long lay down. (Theres a blog somewhere online) I took it easy it was a holiday after all. And was on a tight budget. I took camping stuff for spain and portugal. Moroccan hotels were cheap enough not to bother with the sleeping bag, tent etc etc so i left all that in portugal and just had that one well packed bag for morocco. I really cant recall the exact original colour... Its a '74 (reg'd as '75),,, its not exactly the same as what i painted it with, ive left a good patch of original paint for future reference. I wanted bright primary orange! More like the rally 180 or a '74 porsche carerra (i like the colour, not the car)! 4 choices of reds sounds about right. My next(?) vespa (any classic with a legshield toolbox considered)! will be a bright primary yellow

Actually most of the roads in morocco were better than here in the UK,, My brother (a long distance lorry driver) suggested the same (roads are terrible) but hes never even been there!! (He also suggested I might get stabbed)!!! Hahahahahahahaha! Suggestions/myths like these made me want to go even more!! The roads were ok! probably because theyre relatively new and no one uses them too often.. Especially the toll roads. And Id rather ride through the middle of Marrakesh than the middle of London!! One guy in a booth on a toll road i had to take (diversion) had never seen a vespa before!?!?! Or said i should not be on a toll road on a moped!? (He spoke no english but just kinda scratched his head and laughed)! Plus the fact that most of the people who ride to 'Africa' on 2 wheels have to have a big massive fully equipped off road motorbike makes people think thats what you need. All you really need is a pair of balls!! Hahahahahahah! Im not sure if you done much riding in India H but there its a LOT worse!
