I've just fitted a dr177 but I've got to wait a bit to get a different carb.So I thought I could run it in on my 20/17 with a 118 main jet but looking at the spark plug its running a bit lean.Is this a bad idea ?

maxifields,It's never a good idea to be running lean on a new kit, especially an Iron kit, should be running in rich😉. Mij☺

is it running lean cause its a 20/17( I was hoping putting 118 main would be rich enough )if so is the only option to wait until i can put a 24/24 on .

maxfields, I wouldn't run it lean and wait.😉
What engine is it, as I've a feeling this carb setup has been covered by someone on here before.
Good luck. Mij☺

I've read a lot of posts and I get the impression that you need a 20/20 as a bare minimum. As a bolt on that's probably OK but if your looking to case match and optimise the ports I would imagine you need to be looking at nearer a px 200 set up. The lads on here will see you right.

I ran an old px with dr177 kit and ported casings on a 20/17 carb for about 3 weeks, pretty much ran it in using it and was fine a plug was brown, but slightly lean in bottom end luckily my ride to work doesn't have many slow roads or stops

a 20/17 should be running rich with a 118 , as your running in you shouldnt even be on the main jet yet tho . i'd look at a richer pilot set up an atomiser/air jet . tho a 20/17 has the air bleed hole an no hole in top of pilot jet ,you didnt mistakenly use a 20/20-24/24 pilot jet with the air hole in top did you . I've got the 20/20 in and setup with what I have in my spares box 118 main BE3 atomiser 160 air jet 140/45 idle .Sip exhaust, cutout air filter. The plug is dark brown but not wet as hoped for.Anyone know why and should I be concerned!

Why are you aiming for a wet plug ? a light tan to milk chocolate colour is ideal. Wet is way to rich or wrong plug range - Its not just a case of a plug colour its how it performs that matters as well.

I was expecting it to be too rich with that main jet, its running ok but as new not going more than half throttle.Going out for a couple of hours tomorrow, see how it goes.Cheers
