All quite normal with a new cable. Can be a little confusing when you don't know. If you look on the engine at the gear selector box, the outside cable (closest to you) needs to be tightened. 8mm open ended spanner and wind out the adjuster a few turns until it tightens up on the handlebars.

Done as you have said all is now tight on the bars but have noticed that the adjustment screw took quite a few turns to do it and the thread come out about quarter of an inch from the selector is this normal or is it likely to work its self loose and fall out or am I just panicking

The adjuster will go 3/4 inch, so no where near the limit.
Did you tighten the clutch cable a few turns while you were there? They often need adjusting. Should have about 1/8 inch slop at the lever. When the clutch is adjusted well, changing gear is less clunky.

Nope but did notice it knocked into gear with out clutch being pulled in is tighting the clutch the same method as before and I take it the cable is the one next to it.or have I got to dive inside the selector box...which I really don't fancey doing as I don't have the right tools or knowledge.

Ahh, you don't know where the clutch is. maybe its not for you. its underneath the engine by the exhaust.

Hi Willow, I don't want to overwhelm you with info you don't need yet, but I saw your post earlier and wanted to help if I can. I've done threads on clutch and gears when I did them for the first time, both of which cover cable adjustments with lots of photos: vespa.proboards.com/thread/4070/cosa-clutch-fine-adjustment?page=1vespa.proboards.com/thread/4105/pulling-gear-cables-bodyHere's the clutch adjusters: you can just take up a bit of slack to get it right at the lever, but not so much that you lose your kick-start. and here's the gear adjusters, with just the selector cover removed: It's just a flywheel cowl screw that holds the cover on. You could wind your adjuster back in if you've had to wind it too far to take up the cable stretch, and take up the slack pulling the cable through the nipple under the cover. You don't have to take the selector box off the engine. ….with the selector box taken off engine it's all a bit easier to get to though, but you don't have to: ….it's a bit more complicated to remove it, and there's some oil and you'd be best to have a new gasket ready too, so probably best not to do that bit. - This shows the batwing in Neutral, which is where you want it to be here and on the handlebar when you adjust the cables to be right on the batwing. There's a little 'how-to' here; it's in German and the subtitles are really poorly translated, but just watching how he tapes the handlebars and adjusts the selector box batwing and the two cables will help you understand how it works and how to adjust it. ...just watch it with the sound off to see what he's doing, or practice your German, or enjoy the amusing translations. Hope some of that helps.
