I've just bought a 1987 T5 with a mollosi 170 kit and I am thinking of using Castrol fully synthetic racing oil at 3%. Is this a good idea

The oil is spot on, percentage wise, if you're not sure add more and come down, presuming you purchased it kitted did you not ask the previous owner what they ran it at.

I run my bgm motor at 3% , but I ride hard , if I was riding around town at a slower pace then I would probably use 2% all the time

Brand of oil isn't important, its quality oil that's needed, but saying that, I have used cheap oil when I've been caught out and had to buy from a service station 🚉, my preferred oil is castrol

I used to do a hell of a lot of miles on the sloth, and I’ve used various oils:- Putoline, PJ1, Halfords own, Rock Oil, but for my style of riding, it has to be a semi synthetic, chainsaw oil. As used in fully fledged race tuned scoots, also Lincs Lambrettas are a dealer (I’m about 2 miles from the shop…) and I trust his knowledge on it. I’ve had several ‘mishaps’ with my scoot, and this one has stood the test of time. But, the choice is yours, as this is always an ongoing debate on who runs what and how… Just don’t pay a bloody fortune, and that strawberry scented Putoline smells bloody awful… 🤣

As said oil is a very personal choice, ive used loads of different types but have now settled with Rock Oil Groundsman, 3% in my tuned vespa and 3 to 4% on my lambrettas.
Its a semi synthetic
Ive always used semi, before that i used Putoline TT Sport on bith marques with no problems. Only swapeed as the Putoline went up in price by a big jump even in bulk.
Mind the Rock Oil has just gone up significantly.

I've just bought Castrol Power 1 Scooter oil from Halfords, they have a deal on and it's only £9.79 for a 1ltr bottle and it's £15+ on Amazon. Happy Days!!
