Vespa ET4 125 Pre-leader
Finally got it running again (electrical issue).
But the clutch/belt vibration issue that I had with the old damaged belt is back with a vengeance.
Drive belt looks perfect. It’s essentially brand new.
Have removed starter gear and clutch. Cleaned clutch drum and plates with clutch cleaner. They look to be in good shape.
Reassembled and torqued to spec (3 times now) and still the problem persists.
On the stand, it’ll roll up but makes a hell of a racket and vibrates. On the ground, no power on throttle. It just dribbles along.
Even with the damaged belt it still went, albeit it very rumbley. Now it doesn’t want to go at all!!
What the hell is up with the thing?

Hello there. if this is a four stroke the tapping noise at the front sounds like tappets need adjusting. at the rear could it be spines on a shaft not gripping and causing shaft and hub to spin good luck with it cheers alan.

Yeah. It’s definitely tappety. I need to do valve clearances. It’s definitely a clutch issue of some sort. I’m going to take it to bits (again), and sand the inside of the drum with some emery cloth. Do the same with the clutch pads and wash the belt just in case there’s any oil on any of it case it’s slipping due to contamination. The splines on the shaft end look fine. No wear. I am starting to get frustrated by this. Just wish the bike would work for more than 5 mins without needing to be torn down and fixed.

Hi Alan. Thanks for reply. Nothing seems to be amiss at the clutch end. But that’s where the noise is coming from. The scoot refuses to move with me on it. But will rumble up to speed on its stand. The variator is the old type which has a plate securing the rollers in screwed on the back. I am concern that a roller has worked it’s way loose as I can hear something rattling around in when I turn it by hand. But I can’t get the variator off its shaft to check it, as I can’t remove the smooth steel shaft liner off of the starter gear shaft. It seems to get stuck, and is obviously oiled and slippery so very difficult to pull on, even if with vice grips. I don’t want to damage the sleeve. Could a dislodged roller potentially cause issues at the clutch end? Am tearing my hair out a bit now. I might just bite the bullet and do the wheeling of shame down to the garage and let them figure it out.

Hello. as far as I know the rollers are free to move up and down as you rotate veriator.the noise from behind the clutch drum sounds like the gearbox cogs have stripped. when clutch drum is off try and turn the shaft and feel if its smooth or rough. Good luck with it.

Good luck with it. Hi Alan, Gearbox sounds fine. Nice and smooth. I MIGHT have found the issue though. Finally managed to get the variator and its shaft off. Opened the variator, and 4/6 rollers are out of place just lounging about in there. It’s also filthy. Will go out and see if I can get a new set of rollers today, and hopefully they should solve this issue for good!

SHE RIDES!
Turns out it was the variator after all.
New rollers, all back together, runs beautifully.
Seems a little less peppy. But at least it's running reliably. Need to do valve clearances as it sounds a little tappety, but she is back up and going.
And sorted out a few other little issues like the damaged shaft end.
Result. Thanks for all the help.

Well done. It should run better when tappets are set. And quieter cheers alan.
