Thats standard fitment. Its to help central the head on the barrel. The T5 has a central plug and squish bowl so its important to ensure the head is central in the barrel and this simple method works.
T5 arguably the best motor vespa built.
Running a bit rich!!

Thanks for that! Thats great to hear and reassuring. This is my first try at stripping it down and its not always as straightforward ss it seems in the guides (Haynes, Sausage video, Paxton book etc). I have another question though. One of the cylinder rods is longer than the others by an inch or so and was packed right uo with spacers under the nut. The rod came out ok and didn’t seem seized at all. I’ve ordered the right length rod but can’t figure out why one was longer. www.dropbox.com/s/7gzgcxvoxi92zdd/7C39AA16-E8CA-4063-B76A-A4A9C797E6FE.jpeg?dl=0Also the piston is going to need replacing . Cant find s definite answer about which one to order (there ard grades A to F. A seems most likely (and an A is stamped on the cylinder head). Obviously the wrong piston will lead to a world of pain so want to get it right. Thanks again for any advice

Can you post a picture of the cylinder stud. All studs should be the same size. There should be an extended nut on one stud to bolt the cowl to, but it sounds that one stud is longer, therefore it maybe wrongly be a P200 M8 stud or other.
Piston grade will be stamped on top of the piston and the cylinder on the head gasket face. The text on the head has nothing to do with piston grade.
However the next grade of piston maybe required as the coating on the cylinder will have worn through mileage. Ideally it needs measuring and clearance can be checked. If you dont have that facility than get the same grade. However if they dont have your grade you can go one up if the bike has been used and covered mileage

I think thats a C, dont believe there is a G grade.
The grading is when the cylinder is new, it covers the thickness of the nickosil plating as it can vary at process.
As the cylinder gets used the plating is effectively being worn down increasing the piston to bore clearance, hence checking clearance and looking a grades.
A used cylinder marked C coukd take a grade D or E

I cant see the cylinder being a G as that its very far out on tolerance from the stock size.
The larger grades are to allow for wear.
Thats why its best to have the bore measured.
Also i dont think Asso Werke make T5 pistons anymore and there is less choice from the alternative manufacturer.

Think your right on getting it measured. Ill try a couple of local places and see if they can do it

Anywhere that does reboring can measure it properly
