Not long rebuild a Vespa p200e engine and I'm having problems with 3rd gear slipping out and back in. Happened 3 times in 45 minutes of riding. I'm thinking it's the cables too tight or too loose hopefully. How tight or loose should the cables be

Hello shep to check cables for slack I would take gear change cover off and check you are in neutral on handlebar then check the segments to see if you are in the neutral one. then slacken cable on the small solderless nipple and pull cable to take up any slack then tighten again at the same time looking to see that you haven't moved the segment out of neutral. Do the same with other cable.or you can adjust cable slack with outside adjuster on side of gear change box.then spin back wheel while trying to change the gears and see how it goes.cheers all.

There are some bad quality cruciforms out there, what brand did you use? Genuine Piaggio are still the best, MEC and SIPs own very good. Unbranded are usually really poor.
In respect of cables, at the bottom there should be very little play, but a bit of give in the cable, selector top off and check they are working freely. Take up any slack with the tunnions first with adjusters screeed right in, fine tune with the adjusters. Make sure the cables are all good at top end as well including the roller.

So it's a good crusaform, couple of silly questions, as there a washer, some models had and some don't, is crusaform correct way around, is gear cluster shimmed correctly and gears the Wright way around. Sorry all guess work at 0600 hours on a Monday morning, will have a think about this today and add my thoughts 💭 later 👍

Hello there. it's possible you might have play in gear change box and if you take off to check you can try and see if gear rod is tight (left to tighten) at the same time. Let uk know how you get on cheers alan.

Also the selector arm has a little tapered pin that might need tapping in a bit if it's worked loose. I had a 200 that you could only ride in 2nd and 3rd if you kept tension on the twist grip as the crux was Friar Tucked. Try the crux replacement but consider cog wear if there's not much improvement.

I reset the cable and went for a test ride and broke down. Actuation lever for the clutch cover was broken. Something I forgot to say I use a p200e driveshaft I had in my bits for years so I’m thinking it’s the shim. It’s got new gears so a new shim might be the way. Haven’t had it apart yet so I don’t know how fin the shim is yet. Because I have new gears wouldn’t the shim be standard size like when it was new.

Ive never done it and not sure of the outcome of doing it but there are 2x type of selector box.... As said take it off and inspect the parts within. Its unlikely but worth checking before what will likely be a strip... Dont assume cruciform is good just because its BGM.... Where did the new gears come from?

Yes I found out the about the types of selector boxes recently when I had the wrong one on. I found out the early ones the arm stick out 1.5mm and the later ones the arm is flush. The gears I got off a friend who had them for sometime. He never use them. He can’t remember where he got them from. I will have the selector box off tomorrow and inspect it. If that’s good I will split the engine.

It’s ok bud I put the washer on. I’m almost split the engine now I’m just having a tea and smoke break. Doing it in my shed and cold lying on the floor to do it so I need breaks to get warm.

Had to swop engines round mine. my scooter fell over on the breakdown truck last week. I’ve split the engine to find top of multiple gear pin where the kick start cog gos has snapped off at the end. It fell on the kick start side.

Sorry I’m speaking on other sites and forgot to add on here I broke down. Ride it for about 45 minutes and gears was slipping out and back into 3 about 3 or 4 times then my clutch stopped working. Had to wait 4 houses for breakdown then when strapping it up the scooter fell on its side. No damage from I could find. The crash bar and side panel bars stopped the body from damage. I check the cutch the next day and found a part in the clutch cover broke. The part is on the rod what push the copper part on the clutch. I put the old one back on. Must of got it mix up with a cheap one I had.
