Hi. What is your thoughts on these. Are they a good addition to the engine. What would be the best one to buy.

I was looking at buying the sip vape variable ignition set, bit Roger at prodesigh where I go for my dyno told me to get the static version as the variable is better suited to the race track

Hello Mo, My experience with Vespatronic and Pinasco is that they are really fiddly to install on old models like my 1964 Vnb. The plate wouldn’t sit properly on the engine, had to grind a channel to host a mounting screw properly and never got a good enough spark so the engine will always fill with soot and stop.
What saved me was a video from Italian YouTube channel WhiteOneRacing, who explained you do need to install those with washer on the Back of the plate, or else magnets won’t align with coils and create enough electricity.
Once I installed the washers (0.8mm) the engine runs great, very elastic, very torquey and stays cool all the time, really pleased with performance right now (done 900km).
Oh, and you’ll have to figure out your whole cabling from scratch which is not super straight forward….
Best Dan

They are not worth it on standard and mildly tuned standard set ups. As said above variable timing is more a requrement of hi end tuned set ups. A well set up genuine piaggio/ducati parts static system is good enough.
A geniune later lighter piaggio flywheel is a worthwhile upgrade if not already fitted. The electric start type, in my case i have the toothed ring removed and machined it to fit early p2 casings im running Set the timing to the 'IT' mark on casing to 18 degrees
I`ve ran on genuine piaggio parts on `IT`18 deg for years and loads of hard miles

I got one from beedspeed ( plug and play type ). A friend put a strobe on it, revved it and nothing. He had a old AGUSTO 6000, so tried that. Worked great , so I got one from Andy Francis . Fitted it and went for a 30 mile run. On the way home the engine staggered two times then run OK. The next time I came to use the scooter it would not start. Checked the spark plug and no spark, removed the agusto and she fired up no problem. Told Andy Francis and they said they could not help if they had not fitted it.

They are not worth it on standard and mildly tuned standard set ups. They are not necessarily only for racing use, as they have 8 degrees of ignition variation which makes for a more enjoyable ride with less shifting and cooler engine , but really nothing too extreme. Also, they fit old types of crankshaft, so in my case my choice was between the old points ignition (my flywheel was demagnetise and couldn’t make enough spark) or the variable one. Many people in Europa use them on original classics, even on 1950’s models because of the many advantages of this newer technology. If you have some extra budget and you are willing to do some extra work I would definitely recommend….

I can agree to some extent with the above but i believe the OP is referring to a P range motor(200)
A well set up standard static timed system is more than adequate on a standard and mildly tuned motor including kitted bikes
Bringing the timing down from 23 to 18 on a P2 makes for cooler running at top end with little adverse effect on the low end running.
All for free, with an ease of spare parts and road site repairs.
