Hello Everyone. I am totally new to Vespas, totally new to forums, and really looking for any help. I bought a Vespa off a guy recently and everything was fine for a few days. Now the kickstart seems to be slipping/not engaging now. Here is a 16 second video of what is happening Any help would be greatly appreciated. Am I just dumb and not kick starting correctly? Do I need a new kickstart quadrant? Is this a clutch issue. Any thoughts or suggestions would be immensely appreciated.

Hello there looking at video it doesn't sound good it's making a loud clanking before it starts to move I would take spark plug out and try pressing kickstart down by hand and get a feel of it moving.let us know how you get on cheers alan.

After watching the video, I have a terrible feeling you will be splitting the engine 😒 and you will probably find a problem with the kickstart quadrant

Hey Everyone. I am located in the outer Bay Area, in Livermore, Ca. Here is a video with the spark plug removed. It is easier, but still seems to be slipping.

Disconnect the clutch cable and see if that makes a difference, could be a badly adjusted clutch cable, but I think you will be splitting the cases , not a hard job, Haynes manual will be helpful or as on the forum 👍 hope you get to the problem soon

Not that manual, it's for the small frame model's , I'm no good with technology and can't do a link to correct one. There is a very good website called scooter help, that has all the information on stripping your engine. As for parts I couldn't tell you where to get them, because I'm UK based

The video link below will help with opening the cases with the motor still in the bike. For what you're doing, disregard the section of the video where he removes the clutch. After opening the cases replace the kickstart gear and close. May need a gasket and tools. The video shows what special tools are needed and can order everything from Scooter Mercato in GA.

The gear/pinion is what wears. The quadrant is usually OK. Replace that kickstart gear not the quadrant. While you're in there replace the cruciform (there's videos out there). The cruciform and kickstart gear are two parts that are normally changed when the motor is open. Those parts are designed to wear which keeps the other parts they contact wear to a minimal.

Hello there just to let you know the thread on the gear change cross is a left hand thread so lock the output shaft with a screwdriver through the shaft where the cross is and with a good fitting spanner turn to the right to slacken it dont forget it will be left to tighten when time comes good luck cheers alan.

Well, I got it all back together. Kick start is solid now. However, now I have to set the timing. I thought I marked the stator correctly, but it is off.
