Can the primary/Xmas tree be renewed without removing the rear axle?

No you can not.
Rear axle needs to be removed.

Yes that's right.because the Xmas tree is fattest at the back so you can't pull it out without removing the drive shaft. Thought I'd chip in as it looks like you gone mad old boy.
