I've just bought my first vespa. £300 and dead to the world. So I've been staying up late watching YouTube videos trying to work out how to rebuild the engine. A whole new experience!

Is it all there? I'm going to say: I think so! Along with a lot of soot coating the engine. It's very tired looking - but I quite like that. It's from a friend who needed something reliable so rather than the garage giving him scrap money I said I'd match it, stick it in my shed and start fiddling. I've now got tools all over the place, a bottle of 2 stroke kicked over and spreading across the floor and a learning curve. So far it's coming apart with relative ease. I've gone for a polini 177cc piston kit and 24/24 carb. Is there anything I should watch out for? I'm not new to bikes, but I am new to mechanics and new to vespas.

It's alive!
The engine runs as smooth as - well - I'm not sure what to compare it to as I've never had a 2 stroke before, other than a chainsaw and strimmer... But it's smooth.... Any suggestions?
Carb took a lot of fiddling with. It's impossible to get to mixer adjustment nut when you have an electric start... so it went in and out a few times, and bore some wear because of it.
And I had to take the angle grinder to the first two cooling fins on the cylinder case - again because of the electric start - for the cog teeth on the flywheel. But other than that... Not too bad!
Went out for a little spin today. Lovely day. I think I'm going to enjoy it.

Chamfer the ports on you polini 177 especially the exhaust . I did a half job with small file and the ring still snagged. It needed a proper job. It flew until then. Welcome.
