This afternoon whilst trying to give it the beans on the A556, only to check that my newly refurbed speedo would go up to 70mph, i heard a rattling vibration then a bang and my motor died. A friendly joiner in a van saw me and waited till i pushed it to the layby and gave me a lift home. What a hero! The motor still turns but there is very little compression. Any way, what are my options - can the barrel be bored out? Nikasil lining? new rings? since its a soft seize im hoping the piston will be OK. To be honest Im not entirely happy with the Pinasco, it never really seemed to be that smooth nor powerful. Any advice guys?

New rings, and a change of underpants.... Reckon the bore would be okay if you have a ‘trigger finger’ like reaction on the clutch.

you probably won`t know what the bore looks like until you take it off, if the Nikasil is damaged then I don`t think it can be rebored, however I think it could be re-coated but probably not worth the expense, easiest option is a clean up and a new set of rings, 2 stroke motorbike tuners do some repairs on coated barrels. If the bore is damaged then it may be easier to try a different kit, b ut as you well know where does it all stop, port the cases to match, crank webs altered, bigger carb etc etc t5 4th gear and the list goes on. let us know what it looks like once off.

Cheers, thanks for the advice. I will keep you posted. But since the vespa is now on the naughty step i will turn my attention to another of my projects that needs some of my time. Citydaz

If a Nikasil liner has had a piston nip up then the bore will be scored. Can't be rebored. New one req.
But, did it lock the rear wheel as they usually do? If not, and compression is v. poor then maybe a holed piston? If so, apart from a thorough clean out etc your bore 'might' be ok. Had a mates Lammie do just this on a Nikasil lined 186cc kit. A good clean out plus new piston, little end bearing and rings (and wet 'n' drying the pitting in the cylinder head) gotbit back on song. Timing issue that was.
Good luck!

No, it did not seize, the rear wheel did not lock, it just slowed down. The engine still turns, but with a loss of compression on the kick start. I will get round to having a look at the week-end.
Thinking about going down the "bore out my original iron barrel to 225 and mate with a SIP road 3" route. This may be the least cost option.
thanks for your input.

I messed up a parmakit it needed rebore and re lining. Parmakit said it could be done. Their price €300 plus p+p. I didn't take them up on the offer.

Finally got the scooter back from the shop. It turned out that the 30mm carb had been supplied by the manufacturer with an incorrect set-up. Thus the engine was starved of fuel at 60mph, and bang a hole was blown right through the piston. Barrel was intact. So, new piston, new rings and away we go once again!

Cheers mate. I nearly sold the thing a few weeks ago. Just trying to run it in slowly and smoothly over the next few weeks.
