hi all, i have a vespa px 125 (2011) which has a malossi 166 kit and exhaust fitted. when i brought the scooter the seller said i should put extra oil in with the petrol (vespa has an auto-lube). any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hello I have the same vespa but standard I wouldn't add extra oil as it may weaken the petrol cousing a weak mixture in turn possible seizure or holed piston.also don't worry if bike smokes a lot after standing 3or4 days it's normal I stripped my engine thinking i had a leak into crankcase but found out its two stroke oil dripping into crankcase from carb as its gravity fed i only fill oil tank quarter full this helps.good luck cheers alan.

Ok so extra oil. Some kits running with a full expansion chamber recommend a 3% mix. I have this on my bgm motor, so I removed the auto lube and now mix in the tank at 3%, but you could just add 1% straight into the fuel and keep the auto lube

Ah yes. Do add? Don't add? My personal take on it.
Is the 166 kit just the piston and barrel fit or the fully ported experience? I think if the former then a small and I mean small amount of additional oil is ok. If the latter, then the pre-mix route with a good fully synthetic oil plus the autolube drained and the pipe blocked off (so no extra air gets in to weaken the mixture) is a safer route. I did a friends 125 with a basic 166 addition (no peaking timing/porting but less power than it 'could' make) and used the extra oil route. Think he's done about 4,500K no issues so far. Remember though that the oil burns hotter than fuel/air so adding lots of oil just adds to the heat cycle etc.

I have a Polini 177 on my PX125 with reed valve conversion, scorpion exhaust and disabled auto-lube and I pre-mix 2% with no issues. I resorted to pre-mix mainly because the PHBH carb didn't support it but even if I had stuck with the SI carb, I would have considered disabling the auto-lube as I have been told they are not that reliable. How true that is I don't know. Not sure if it helps but just my tuppence worth

I think the Autolube is fine if used as the designer intended and works well. BUT, start messin' with tuned engines, larger capacity cylinders etc then it can go awry. No fault of the autolube; it just works well as it should with a std set-up.

My autolube packed in after 2 years of ownership (was brand new in October 2006) been mixing in the tank since. I don’t trust the autolube system, I rely on my split personality reminding me...., 😈
