Hi folks, Ive been told that the two leading scooters of Quadrophenia , as you know Jimmys (phil daniels) lamberetta and the faces (sting) GS vespa are very much still alive and well? I had a very fasinating conversation with the chairman of the Basingstoke scooter club and would love to know more or see some pics of them in there present state. Iam aware of three GS vespas were used in the end part of the film, one of which almost hit the filming helicopter, thats well documented on the disc 2 of the special edition dvd. Many thanks ... nigel

Wasn't the GS actually a 125TS (that late 70's one Vespa made in the Rally body) made to look like the older GS? Not that that helps answer your Q ;D

The Scooterist Scene mag had something in about those scoots - can't remember what though - I think I might still have them somewhere, they're less than a year old.

Just found the mags - it says 3 were flung off the cliff, a fourth was damaged while riding it along the cliff, a fifth 'went missing' and found years later in a garage - kept by one of the crew, and the sixth was used for the rest of the film. That's how I read it anyway, I'm sure some Quad fans will correct my nutshell summary!

Bryn's right, the one that Sting rode in the film was a TS125, a smaller capacity version of the Rally, fitted with GS panels but not, for some reason, a GS mudguard from what I can see. I'm pretty sure there's at least two versions of each of the famous scooters from the film doing the rounds. I think someone in the Modrapheniacs SC owns the best known versions of Sting's 'GS' and Jimmy's Li, but I don't know if they're the actual ones from the film. Gavin Frankland from Liverpool had a proper GS that was made into an exact replica of Sting's (featured in issue 205 of Scootering, July 2003), and I saw another replica of Jimmy's Li at the IOW rally last year parked outside the ice rink: Ironically, the best place to get the lowdown on such quadrotrivia is probably the book Chasing The Wind: A Quadrophenia Anthology by Gary Wharton. Sadly, Gary specifically demanded that all trace of his book be removed from vespa.org.uk because when I reviewed it I told the truth about its shortcomings. I wonder if he also asked Scootering to destroy all back issues of the magazine containing Andy's review of the book that said much the same thing.
