Hullo all,
Gonna be a bit of a rant on here, apologies in advance. Skip to near the bottom for my actual queries, need to give a bit of background first really though.
First off, thank for the help I got last time I was here on the helmet front. Went for the Modena one, well happy with it.
I've had a Vespa PX 125 (2006) since June last year and had been commuting with it every day happily until I had my first off at the end of January. Was on my way home from the match (lost 3-0 to Blackburn, a bobbins night all round) on a cold Saturday night and when I was sent flying across the road in the middle of Rusholme (an area of Manchester where driving standards are none existent). Won't go into the details overly but the bloke didn't indicate and turned last minute, left me no where to go but into the side of him. To be fair though it was partly my fault, positionally at least ... but I only put myself in that position due to his lack of indication.
Although it has been a right ball ache with all the insurance malarkey and now with trying to get it fixed, I just feel lucky that I come away with nowt serious injury wise, just minor cuts and bruises. I'm reasonably confident in my riding ability but its made me realise that I need to allow for other peoples mistakes and lack of care .... I'm a more cautious rider now and take better care myself so maybe it has all been a blessing in disguise.
My bike took quite a bit of damage on the right side, mainly from the impact with the road as I had managed to brake quite a lot so the collision with the other vehicle was only minimal. Anyway, no witnesses on either side so his insurance have settled on a 50/50 basis. They have given me £780 (half their valuation minus the salvage value).
The main damage is as follows – front mudguard is largely bent on the right side and has bad rusting/scratching, right side panel has gad rusting/scratching, right rear indicator casing broke, glove box indented (can maybe be pushed out?), right side and underside of chassis slightly bent from impact (might just have to lump this as think it would cost a fortune to sort) and lots of rust on the underside where there was an impact (not sure what can be done here?), front brake lever plastic casing damaged and minor scratches on other areas of bike.
To finally get to the point ... my bike is still ridable (I've still been using it ever since) but now I have the money through I need to think about repairs. I've had one quote from Carole Nash at £1800 which seems plain daft. It seemed to be all singing all dancing though e.g. there is a scratch to my front rack and they have put down a replacement at 90 quid. I'm gonna get another quote from Philip Youles (where I bought it from in the first place) too.
I can provide pics of the bike and the quote I’ve had if that will help? I’ll upload them to a free pics site and post the links.
I don’t know if it will be more cost effective to try and trade it in as part value against another bike or whether to bite the bullet and get it completely fixed or maybe just the main stuff fixed? It’s difficult to figure out. Any advice would be most appreciated. This site is a god send for us novices! Also, does anyone know any good repair shops in the Greater Manchester/North West areas?
I had been putting my full bike test off until I got my normal driving license out of the way which I just had done just a few weeks before the accident. This has set me back a fair bit now. Was planning on doing a fair bit of modding/accessorising once I had the L-Plates off ‘n all. As its only a 125 I wouldn’t be able to do my full class test (the name of the license type escapes me at the moment) so I was thinking of trying to get a slightly more powerful bike anyway or maybe mods to mine to bring it up to the required power. My thinking being that if I’m gonna do the test I may as well get it all out of the way so that if I ever do want a higher CC I won’t be restricted. Any advice here would be useful too.
Am thinking maybe I should just cut my losses and see what I can get for my PX in a damaged state and put the money towards a 2nd hand bike. But I’m not really experienced so its hard to call.
I dread to think what my next insurance quote is going to be! Was £425 last time just for 3rd party, fire and theft.
Anway, Cheers all. Gardez las foi.
