Hi all, just after some help and advice please.
The recent lockdown has meant I’ve had a bit of time to pull the dust sheet off my Vespa for the first time in probably 6 years.
Unsurprisingly it wouldn’t start. Good news is it turns over and I’ve got a spark, I’ve cleaned the carb as best I could without removing totally - jets out checked float etc - no sign of any obvious gunk. New battery fitted - still nothing.
There was probably a litre of fuel still in the tank which I syphoned off thinking it’s probably gone off.
Put fresh Fuel direct into the carb and got it running momentarily and it sounded great!
Stuck a litre of fresh fuel in the tank - but nothing.
Am I right in thinking that as it ran then compression and spark are ok? Meaning I’ve probably got a fuel problem?
I’ve had the plug out which was new before it was parked up - and dried it off cleaned it etc.
Before I pull the tank out and check fuel line and tap is there any easy way of checking fuel is getting to the carb? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ged

If you remove carb box top and loosen the fuel line where it joins the carb, you will see if fuel is flowing. But you will probably have to clean carb and tank , as it has sat for a while

Thanks Adrian - Should it just flow with gravity when I open the tap?
I kind of assumed the tank would have to come out just putting it off... don’t fancy sucking petrol again.

Yes should flow with gravity, gauze maybe gummed up in the tank, but carb ckeaner should shift it.

So I disconnected the fuel line at the carb and turned the tap on - not even a dribble. Looks like I’m taking the tank out, any tips before I set about it?
Thanks

Removing the tank is easy, but if you need to remove fuel tap you will need the correct spanner. But you might be able to clear the gunk by spraying carb cleaner in through the fuel pipe bit to clear it

Carb cover off You can see the fuel pipe,, and a jubilee clip holding it on,(leave jubilee clip alone),loosen the screw at the top and see if fuel comes seeping out the top. If so taps ok, remove the carb and check gauze filter If no fuel then remove jubilee clip, blow into fuel line compressor best

No fuel at the carb but I managed to get the carb cleaner nozzle right in the tube and gave it a liberal squirt and that seemed to unblock it.
Its starting first kick now.
Thanks for the help guys, I just need helmet, MOT, tax, insurance and the sun to come back out now!

Glad you got it running. Hope you cleaned out the fuel tank well, because you might have to do the whole job again if bits of crud start coming out of tank and into carb.

I haven’t really done anything in the tank as such apart from get the old fuel out - it doesn’t look too bad (although I don’t really know what I’m looking for?) I think the problem was more in the tube, but I guess your point applies either way. I’m going to risk it for now, I’m not going far and I’m getting used to stripping the carb down!
