Good morning, rookie error, I left the fuel on last night and now cant kickstart the bike. Have taken plug out which was wet and cleaned but still no joy. Is there a quick fix to get it started cleared of fuel etc. Many thanks

Turn fuel off, remove plug and kick it over , or get piston to top of cylinder and light it with a match, but be careful

Hi Adrian,my problem is a bit more involved now. Noticed I had no spark when I took plug out as you suggested. Followed cables back to connector box, wires coming off spade connector fell apart when i touched them. Hopefully will have enough slack to cut them back and put a join in

Is fuel getting to carb Do you have a spark iv left fuel tap on for a week, still started ok (not recommended) Just because you left it on,DOESNT mean that’s what it is,might just be coincidence look for others, normal silly things, plug fuel off switch

Some of the wiring in the junction box has disintegrated, insulation is crumbling away and copper is very brittle, going to try and remake the connections before i try anything else.

Not sure I will be able to use existing wiring, its in pretty poor shape, does that mean changing the stator plate now.

You can buy just the stator plate wires , but would only change the wires as long as the stator is 100%

It's always started first time in the past,I'm confident replacing cables as long as I can get to them, how big a job is it?

You have to remove flywheel, then mark position of stator plate, remove stator plate solder new wires and but back as it came off. Where abouts are you ? Maybe a forum member maybe able to help

No electric start, wiring in junction box has turned to powder so need to repair or replace before I can go any further.

Seen plenty stators do this, the plastic sheathing breaks down and allows moisture to corrode thee copper (goes green). Stator plate rewiring is straight forward when you've done them before. You can buy (BGM) do a rewire kit. You need a decent soldering iron (and flux). There's a good tutorial on SLUK for a Lambretta stator and its the same principle. You could replace the whole stator which is a quick job, but if its a genuine Piaggio then I'd rewire it. When this first happens to me many years ago, before I was knowledgeable enough to rewire, I took the stator off, cut back the wiring that was bad to where it was okay then jointed new (twisted then soldered). Worked for years If you opt to fully rewire before you start removing the wires cut them back to where they are sound and check the low tension coil and pick up.

Thanks for the advice, what am I looking for on the coil and pickup?

While not ultimately conclusive you can test the L T coil and pick up with a multi meter. You would need to check them after the rewire to make sure the soldering has taken so worth testing before you strip it. Test on Ohms - should show continuity and readings Coil Green to white 500 +/- 20 Pick up red to white 110 +/- 5 Readings can be affected by temperature low readings in the cold. If you choose to buy a new stator beware there are many crap ones out there.

Thanks very much, have the new wiring on order and will give it a go,guessing the existing stator is ok as has always started first time. Problem only came about when tracing a poor brake light connection. Thanks again.

gpowell, managed to cut the wires back and extend them. All working ok at the moment but dont trust it long term as wiring is so poor, good to pinpoint the problem before taking the stator apart. Will test and replace wiring when it turns up. Thanks for your advice.
