Hi Everybody.
Its been a very long time since i've posted on this forum, probably over ten years. Glad its still here and i hope someone can help.
I've a P2 that i rebuilt about 10 years ago. Its got a Harry Barlow stage 4 lump in it. Its been standing for around 8 years although its been started every now an again.
Anyway i've decided to bring it out of retirement and it starts and runs great. However when the engine is running it'll go into first but creeps and its impossible to move it from first to any other gear. When its not running all the gears select fine. Last week it would run through the gears while running but impossible to select neutral so for some reason its got worse.
I've tried running it for a while in case the plates have dried out and i'm now stuck!
The engine has done around 400 miles since it was rebuilt and it was difficult to get into neutral before i mothballed it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Tim

Hello when you say creeps is it in first gear and creeping forward. if so sounds like sticking clutch plates might free when used.or strip it and clean re oil.also it helps to roll bike forward when changing gear to allow gogs to line up to engage.try this first.good luck alan.

Hi. Yes it creeps in first. I thought it might be the plates sticking. Is getting to the clutch an engine out job? Thanks...Tim

Welcome home ๐ต๐ต
Sounds like you need to adjust the clutch cable

Hi, start with the simple stuff. First if you haven't already, change the oil. Then run it up to temp and hold the clutch lever in with a cable tie, let it tick over for a while. As the plates are separated, the oil will get in-between the plates and it might just be ok.

Thanks for that
Iโve adjusted the clutch cable itโs not that. Iโll try running it with the clutch lever pulled. Hopefully thatโll fix it

Engine off. put into first gear pull clutch lever in. press down on kick start should feel some pressure then should go down to floor without pressure. also put in gear push bike clutch out when under pressure pull clutch in should push free hope this helps cheers alan.

Clutch removal is not an engine out job, just need to remove back wheel and jack bike up, may require carb off and shock disconnected to drop engine down on pivot for better access, got to be worth a look if above doesn`t work.

No joy. With that.
It does select all gears when the rear wheel is lifted off the ground!
Anyway. Iโve removed the selector and all gears Select by moving the shaft. Cleaned all the gloopy grease from the selector and drained the oil.
Iโll re-grease. Fill up and try again. If that donโt work Iโll have to look at the clutch plates

If its still causing a problem, it's fairly straight forward to take the clutch out. If you take your spare wheel off you'll probably be able to take the clutch cover off easily and then remove the clutch centre nut. This might need a special socket depending which clutch model it is. If the nut is loosened and removed I would just have a look and make sure the Woodruff key slot is in the 12 o'clock position to ensure it doesn't fall out into the gearbox when you pull the clutch off. When you dismantle the clutch just check for any obvious damage and that the plain clutch plates are flat. If everything appears as it should, it's possible the friction plates were just a bit dry and need a soak in oil. There are some good vids on youtube on Vespa clutch rebuilding and I'm sure it will be something easily fixed, especially if it was running ok previously. Hope this is of help. Kev.

Put it all back together after cleaning the selector box and draining/re filling the gearbox.
When the engine is not running it selects all gears up and back down easily. With the engine running and the rear wheel off the ground it selects all gears up and back down easily.
Out on the road it goes from first to second fine, really struggles with 2nd to third (needs a throttle blip) and same from third to fourth.
Coming back down is a bit stiff but struggles by neutral seems to be partway between gears. Absolutely cant select neutral until the engine is killed.
I think its cable adjustment but im not sure if there too loose or too tight!

If the clutch cable was too tight it would select gears easily and not fully engage, giving a bit of slip especially in 4th gear
