I'm thinking in the future of fitting my front brake hose down the centre of the steering column with a SIP speedo and I wondered if anyone has experience of the brake line kits where you build them yourself. I intended to open out the speedo hole in the forks and fit the brake line through it, then fit the banjos once the line is in situ.

Not much to say really, you've covered it all. I bought the bits and built it myself but easy to do.

Can you tell me what brake line kit you are thinking of, as this is something that I want to do in the near future

That's the thing, I don't know what brand to buy as there are various brands on t'internet. Basically I want the cheapest that will do the job that consists of 2 terminals and a length of hose that can be joined with spanners to create a made to measure line. Goodridge did something years ago that just had the banjos screw into an existing thread on the end of the hoses, but I don't want to enlarge the hole in the forks any more than necessary so I want a kit that just uses a length of hose to thread through and then add the banjos. If I thought you could get banjo fittings big enough, I'd even consider Shimano bicycle hydraulics but I suspect it wouldn't withstand the pressure. Any suggestions are appreciated

You can buy the length of goodridge hose needed and you can get banjos that push in so you could thread the hose through then press the banjos on.

True Ironsloth but peace of mind is worth a bit. I've been on venhills site and it looks nice stuff but I'd feel more confident with the link Shaunbond put up mainly because I can't see a terminal that look right for screwing into the master cylinder. Or rather there is but I'm not sure if the hose is flexible enough to come up the centre of the forks and then turn sharply enough to screw into the cylinder. I've seen some stuff on ali express that was cheap but I've never used the site so I'm reluctant unless anyone can recommend them.

One of those is the wrong fitting for the master cylinder. You need a screw in type, not a Banjo. Assuming you have a standard set up...

Just as a side issue to this project, have just recovered after seeing the cost of a sip speedo. Is the sip the only option or would it be possible to fit a budget GPS speedo/odometer on top of the butty box or somewhere? I'm happy to leave my original speedo in place and just remove the speedo cable.

You can run both the original Speedo and cable alongside the new brake line. Hopefully this pic shows

Price wise, I got a cheap length of hose for £5 but the two fitting were probably £15.

Cheers Shaun, that's a nice setup. Were your fork hub brakes originally or did you have to drill a new hole for the brake pipe?

Didn't have to drill as had an obsolete hole which would have been for drum brake cable.

Yes please.. How long did the hose need to be?

Will measure and let you know, sorry don't know length, but easy to measure just use a cable as a template.

Apologies for resurrecting an old post. I'm no nearer doing this hose mod as I use my scoot for commuting so I'm never off the road. I've just found a site doing a 90 degree male swivel fitting which is M10 x 1. The male thread is 36mm to the bend of the pipe. Does that sound like it will give enough clearance to connect to a brake coming through the steering column? www.carbuilder.com/uk/90-degree-swivel-male-concave-seat-m10-x-1

I think I've answered my own question as it looks like a 90 degree bend will make hose routing impossible. I could maybe use a straight male fitting and let the hose flexibility take care of the routing. A 45 degree fitting seems impossible to source as venhill has stopped doing them. Please could someone advise the minimum length the male thread can be and still seat correctly in the master cylinder. Cheers.

Cheers Adrian, would you have a link by any chance? I found their site but they only have banjo fittings no male 45s

Failing that, Goodridge will do the 45 degree swept fitting, or a company called HEL.
