Unfortunately a, couple of nights ago I had a minor accident on my scoot. Was braking and it went into a skid, managed to keep it upright for but it carried on skidding again and I went over on the right. No other parties were involved.
It had been raining and I was coming up to the some lights on red and that's when it happened. Didn't feel I was going overly fast but maybe I should have been a bit slower taking into account the weather ... still I wouldn't have expected what happened based on my previous experience.
Not much damage to me other than purple legs and my pride, feel a bit of a t*t. Especially as it is the 2nd time I've come of it in the space of 18 months. This one has shook me up more though as the first time it was due to someone cutting me up (though I could have probably avoided it with better positioning) so that was easy to explain. This time a big part of it was the bike, so that makes me nervous.
I ride the scoot most days in all weather so end up riding in the rain quite a lot. I've only had 1 other skid before which was similar (and also when raining) but I managed to keep it upright that time. That was only a month or so ago ... I'm finally going to get to some questions in a minute. I changed my standard PX tyres about 3 months ago for some new Continental whitewall tyres and prior to using them I'd never had a problem like this, now it has happened twice in a short space of time. On the old tyres I've drove in worse weather and braked in the same situation without problems. Are the whitewalls not as good in that respect? Or is it just purely down to my bad judgment? I'd only checked the pressures a few days before and the treads are also alright.
As far as damage to the bike goes it could have been a lot worse ... but it's still not great. Front mudguard bent and scratched, minor scratching on side panel, legshield trim could probably do with replacing and my kickstart isn't right. It seems like it is resting to high so when it is used it is hitting the side panel on the way back up .... not sure what I can do about this. Haven't really been able to look at it properly though as by the time I get home it is getting dark (especially on the soddin' bus). Also, I might just be imagining this but it seemed like there were more exhaust fumes than normal with hight revs from a stationary position ... not acutally rode it since yet. I just wheeled it back after the incident as I was only 5 minutes from my flat and wasn't starting initially ... took a couple of minutes with the electric start a few hours afterwards before it would start ... starts fine now though.
If I didn't love my scooter and the whole scene around scootering so much I'd be very tempted to knock it all on the head
Any advice appreciated.
If you made it to the end of this monster post you're dafter than me.
