Need some advice from a T5 expert:
Kicked over Lu's Mk1 T5 for the first time since before Christmas yesterday afternoon. Went on the fourth kick and the engine sounded sweet as a nut, but there was sh*t loads of smoke (that didn't smell much like 2-stroke) belching out sideways from between the floorboards and the exhaust on the nearside. It's still got its original exhaust on, do you think it's just holed, or is it something more serious?

There are a few things u can check. First of all it is quite normal in my experience a Vespa smokes loads when started. If the smoke comes from the exhaust, as u said, there may be a hole... it is not unusual people wrongly punch holes in the body of the exhaust to gain power. You can check if the nut that fixes the pipe on the cylinder is nice and tight and if all of this is ok nex step would be checking if the head is bolted in properly, although you would realize that as the engine would hardly go back to low rpm.
Talking about smell, if the smoke smells like clutch oil... then it is without doubt the oilseal clutch side. u can easily check it with the engine on... unscrew the oil cap screw, the one on the side of the gearbox. if the engine accellerate then thats it, oilseal. Sorry.
If all of the above is up to scratch then do not worry about a smokey start. Hope this helps

Hello...yes, we bought a new sito plus which seems fine now...but, is white smoke normal on a new exhaust?

There's a suggestion the oil seal needs replacing, because there is a fair bit of smoke when you first set off which smells like gearbox oil. It stops quite soon, so the seal's probably just on its way rather than shagged totally.
We'll be having a look at it, probably Easter weekend.

Hello...yes, we bought a new sito plus which seems fine now...but, is white smoke normal on a new exhaust? It's normal for a 2 stroke to smoke white, especially when cold, it's down to the mix petrol/oil sticking to the cold case internall walls and parts, that's why you choke to start the engine. Petrol hardly reaches the combustion chamber. When they get warmer the particles evaporate thus enriching momentarely the mix air/petrol and producing more smoke than normal for a little while.

Phew After Sunday's ride-out I think white smoke did eventually stop. Nearly gassed out our fellow Cloud-Niners at the start though...sorry chaps!!!

I wasn't quite figuring out the extension of the smoke cloud... You still want to check the integrity of the oil seal. Mine burst while "speeding" and I tell you it is not a nice thing to happen.
It takes literally less than two mins to see if it is ok.

Oh ok, I forgot to say it smells of gearbox oil. Will get to look at it at the weekend hopefully.

Been a while getting back on this post - scoot seems ok now - someone told me it was probably just burning off its inner coating because it's a new exhaust. Thanks for the help everyone.
