Hi all, new to the forum and not sure if this is the right place but if you can give me any help then I'd very grateful
It's a bit of tricky situation but my father recently passed away, well a few months back he asked me if I'd be intrested in building up a Vespa as he had a few back in day and wanted relive what he called his glory days to which I said yes as I'm a keen tinkerer myself. We managed to get a frame and some other bits from a old mod friend of his and that's about as far as it got before he took ill. I was recently tidying out my mothers garage and found this frame and after looking at it for a while I've decided to try and do something with it in memory of him. I remember the guy we got it off saying he had no v5 or reg plate but it wouldn't be to hard to find out. After searching for a few days it seems that's not the case so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could find out the reg of the frame when all I have is the vin number? Any help would be great fully apretiated

You might need to obtain a dating cert from vespa club using the frame number and then apply for V5 once scooter complete and has MOT and insurance, this is the method for obtaining a v5 for a vehicle never before registered in the UK, DVLA are not known to be very helpful, even though they should be!

if youve got the vin number a call to dvla explaining the situation ,playing up the bereaved son clearing his fathers estate angle .theres a chance the numbers on there system already ,then its £25 to get a new v5c . but a lot of old scooters have been off the road long enough to lose there reg numbers ,allowing dvla to flog em off . then its declare it NOVA to customs an excise ,build an mot it an send these documents an a dating cert with £55 to dvla an get a new reg number . always wise when ringing dvla if they say they know the number ask if theres any police interest in the vehicle .better to sort it out then, rather than after building/painting the scoot .H

DVLA are a nightmare, if you had engine number with frame then you could just apply for v5 and it would cost you £25, as for nova and re-reging, they will tell you to restore it first, I have 2 vespas, took me a year to get v5 for the first one and 8 month for the second one, put me through the nova sh*t and re-reg to then tell me they can't as its already on the system, have you put the frame number into www.scooterhelp.com yet? that might give you year and model number.

Afaik you can’t apply for a new V5 for the £25 fee unless you also know the reg number. With just frame number you will have to go through the whole process of applying for a new age related reg using the v55 form, it may then end up with the original reg if that’s not been re issued and it was at some point registered in the UK.
As henri says you really should call dvla and check the frame has no police interest and is not scrapped, often there is a reason a frame has no plate and no v5 and you need to be sure of this before you throw money at it.
Once Dvla say it’s not a problem you can build it up and go through the process to reg, with dating cert, mot etc.
Personally I’ve never had to deal with nova certification, but given its not an imported scooter, you found it in a shed in the UK in parts, I don’t think nova applies does it?

Like H says, if you have the vin and engine number (and nice woman on the phone), £25 and a dodgy chat up line, you should be sorted. Easy as that, if they are there.

i'm afraid even with good evidence the scooter has been uk registered before dvla will still ask for a nova, bryno. its not hard to do, google nova1 forms an theres a pdf you can print them from an a set of notes of how to fill them out .takes about 2 weeks to get a nova back usually .H
