Got a good deal on a marantz cd63 mark2 signature edition cd player and a Rega planer 3, turntable ( record player ๐), just hooked up the cd player and about to fit a new belt to the Rega. Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Stadium Arcadium album is sounding good on cd, Denon amp and Tannoy floorstanding speakers and early Christmas present hifi rack that came yesterday, Just need better speaker wire as inter connection cables have been uprated already. Used to be right into hifi years ago, so still had some stuff tucked away, speakers, amp, cables etc, my mate gave me the bug again, by selling me the Rega for ยฃ120 a few weeks ago, then spotting the cd player in cash generator of all places for ยฃ100. proper old school sound system great, why would anyone want to stream music when you can dig out a piece of vinyl you have had since the days when you had hair and listen to it! I still love listening to old records, there may be a few crackles but they have been there for years. Call me old fashioned (and I am) but I still like to look at album artwork and hold it in my hand, always better stored in a cupboard than a cloud in my opinion. So now the weather is proper winter, time to enjoy a bit more time indoors listening to the sound system, hope you enjoy it Mij.

I agree ianmartin40, sometimes the grainy crackle of vinyl adds to the atmosphere, and I especially agree with hold and viewing the artwork properly! Unfortunately I have downloaded a few albums but I could still break out the old Captain Beefheart records if needed!! Oh, and my hairs intact (so far so good.... ๐).

Hey ironsloth it is fairly obvious that we will prefer records and maybe even cassettes cd`s etc as we are the folk who are running around on scooters that are still very similar to their original designs from the 50`s, most of us like objects designed in the past so why should music format be any different. Will I be thrown off the forum if I admit to having an auto scooter as well? At least it is 2 stroke!

citydaz, thanks for the reply,no don't have a mains conditioner, can you recommend a cheapish one?, have it on a power surge plug in tower tho๐.๐ Only goes up to 11 if my neighbors and wife are out and I'm listening to Spinal Tap lol๐.
ianmartin40,thanks for your reply, audiophiles seem to think vinyl sounds warmer and more involving.Agree with you about vinyl being more tactile etc.๐
ironsloth, agree with your take on it too.๐ I also have all my own hair ๐, ( hope I haven't spoke too soon ๐).
Out of the 5 or 6 guys I know that are into hifi,( 3 of them are scooterists) my system is the most basic, so when any of them rip the pish out of mine, I just say " no point in me spending loads of ยฃยฃยฃยฃ, as my tinnitus stops any further improvement ๐. Did add ยฃ21 worth of cheap speaker cable tonight as can't find my old cable and it would be too short to use where my rack and speakers are placed now.( To stop my Mrs from nagging ๐๐).
Happy listening to you all.

Hi Ive got a couple of Tacima mains conditoners from maplins. One for my hi-fi (cambridge azur 640 audio amp, arcam cd, project carbon turntable), and one for my TV, dvd, soundbase. Only about ยฃ35 and it gets 5 stars from what hi-fi. They really do make a difference, even the wife noticed the improvement.
Dont worry about having a "basic" set up, you can improve the weakest component as you go. In a moment of madness I once paid ยฃ100 for the power lead into my CD!!
Try to make make friends with an audio buff - that way you can get his cast-offs for cheap!

What's the last 3 albums you bought, and what format was it? These are mine (don't stick them into YouTube, I have a very wide taste in music) :-
Belzebong -Greenferno (Digital Download-was cheap)
Professor Elemental - Father Of Invention (Digital Download-actual cd was nearly ยฃ20!)
Maggot t**t - 8 Bit Apocalypse (Digital Download-couldn't get the cd)
Most annoying really, as I prefer a hard copy.

Iam afraid my choices are a bit predictable and stereotyped:
The Jam - 1977 The Who - A&B sides Northern Soul - a cheap compilation CD

citydaz, thanks for the info on mains conditioners, very much appreciated. That sounds like a nice system you have ๐๐. Totally true about getting stuff from hifi buffs, had many good deals when I was into it before. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Marantz-PM-66SE-KI-Signature-Edition-Integrated-Stereo-Amplifier-Phono-Stage/272980795946?epid=7006753542&hash=item3f8eec622a:g:FBEAAOSwm3paMI8h I Want one of the above ๐, when money permits,to go with my cd player, one of my mates has this amp but won't sell lol. ironsloth and citydaz, haven't bought any music recently, but today listened to : The Who, live at Leeds on vinyl. The Jam Beat Surrender on cd. My scooterist/hifi mate, that sold me the Rega and found the Marantz Cd player for me, bought me... Pink Floyd, the wall on Cd, he knows I'm not into them but also gave it a good listen today and surprisingly enjoyed it. Just now, listening to... Elbow, The seldom seen kid on cd. Like you ironsloth, I also have a wide taste in music ๐. All the best. Jimโบ

Since getting the internet in '98 I stopped buying CDs, Napster, limewire and emule were all good sources for mp3s back in the early days before iTunes Probably the last CD I bought was Bjork - Post I've still got all my old vinyl ( 200 12" singles , 300 7" singles and about 500 LPs )although the stereo is a bit loud for everyone except me Currently have a NAD 3130 amp Bang & Olufsen Beogram 1202 ( from freecycle about 10 years ago) Kenwood CD player (just tried it and doesn't read discs anymore) KEF Concord IV floorstanding speakers Amp is hooked up to my old Xbox media centre so I stream music from my PC Some of my old vinyl 12" Neon Lights in luminous vinyl 12" singles 10" Killing Joke Madness Nutty Boys comics that came with the first editions of Los Palmas 7 12" edition

tried some Kef floorstanding iQ5's on my system, not impressed after listening to my Tannoy floorstanders. My mate brought me his Mission 731's with micrometer floor stands that I gave him in the 1990's, feck me they are sounding good! Just asked him how much he wants for them and he said just to keep them as I've helped him with plenty of things in the past. Will try them for a few days then swap back to the Tannoy speakers before deciding what's working out best for my damaged (tinnitus) ears.
Oh and just put a motor thrust bearing kit on the Rega turntable, to go with the new uprated belts, so need to upgrade the cartridge next, I think and buy the mains conditioner that citydaz kindly told me about.๐
Happy listening.

Sounds good !
what about the sub-woofer though?
You need some bottom end for maximum Massive Attack.

Citydaz, the Kef speakers I auditioned were very, very bass light and could have done with a sub lol, especially when listened back to back with my Tannoy ( made in Scotland I believe ๐) floor standers, the winner for me tho,( so far) are the Mission ( made in England ๐ ) speakers especially when hooked up to the Rega turntable plugged into the birthday present from my Darlin', a Rega A2D phono stage ยฃ89 well spent.๐
All the best.

Yes , floorstanders are defo the way to go. Wanted a pair of mission floorstanders last time I upgraded my speakers, but with two young children crawling and toddling around I had to compromise with some mordaunt short wall mounted speakers. The mission sub-woofer gives a good balance since the mordaunts are a bit on the bright side.
