Got the engine rattle sorted out - turned out to be a worn flywheel woodruff key.
Next problem .....
Refitting the selector box..
Cables all tightened nicely with selector box off the engine, getting each gear nicely.
However ๐ฌ๐ฌ
Once I put the selector box back onto the engine I canโt get past 2nd to either 3rd or 4th. Would this suggest the gears have been reinstalled incorrectly ?? Thanks as always
Forgot to add .... with selector box off & using selector rod by hand and pulling / pushing it I can get the gears

TBH I've never heard of anyone setting up the cables with the selector box not connected, not saying it's not possible, in theory it should work if you are sure you started in neutral, but personally I'd loosen the cable ends, bolt the box on and start again from there..

The way I do it is, fit the selector box, then fit the cables, so I agree with bryno ๐.
Take the scooter off it's stand and try pushing the scooter forward as you try to select 3rd and 4th gear, as this spins the gears in the gearbox and helps selection or start the scooter and drive it, trying the gears, which does the same thing
I'm assuming you tried to select all the gears with the engine not started? and that's what made gear selection hard. ๐
If the engine is out of the frame, try spinning the rear hub, as this spins the gears in the gearbox to help gear selection.
Once fitted and working well, if you ever need to split the engine again, you can remove the selector box with the cables and trunions all fitted. ๐

Still no further on with this issue .... Work really getting in the way of things ! Need to win the lotto soon so I can retire ! However weekend is coming so should be able to get it done then.
Another task on the โto doโ list is to fit a new ignition barrel ( had to drill old one out). Parts I have are new barrel & key, the housing with lock/on/off ( apologies - not sure of correct name ), a small grub screw, some sort of very small metal tang, the steering lock & the plastic casing with wires.
Could any kind soul take pity on me and advise how to install it !!! Thanks !!
