I've noticed a few rust spots on my exhaust, so I'm going to take it off and treat/paint it. Whilst it's off, I'm going to drop the engine out and do the little base gasket mod that pxguru mentioned a while back (or attempt to, anyway!). I've a few queries:
1. A few people have said to me that 'full fat' Coke is good for removing rust. Is that BS or legit?
2. Can anyone recommend a good matt rust-proof paint?
3. With regards to dropping the engine out, do I need to disconnect the fuel line, throttle and choke cables? Common sense tells me I should, but I'm checking with the more savvy!
Cheers
Nick

Dunno if coke will shift rust , maybe ? Cleans pennies up well ! God knows what it does to yer guts ! I'd gi ve it a wire brush and then some BBQ paint from B an Q which is cheaper and as good as other high temp paints !
Cheers.

its probably better to use caustic soda. you could dilute it with coke to make it even better I suppose

Bbq paint is ok for a fix but Por 15 is the stuff you want. The Frost catalogue is the stuff of dreams...... Mm... Frost....

1. A wire brush and 'Kurust' is the best thing for rust www.hammerite.co.uk/product/kurust/2. Halfords sell Kurust and a matt black exhaust paint that is as good as any 3. No need to disconnect so much. Rubber bellows off the carb box, Centre stand on one brick each side, Back tyre off, Exhaust off, an axle stand under the number plate and rear shock blot out and swing the engine to the floor If you go the full 1.0mm, put at least a 112 main jet in. Hopefully it runs spluttery and lower it a jet at a time from there.

Thanks for the replies, guys, all very helpful
pxguru, a full 12 pt jump in jet size? I'm guessing this is erring on the side of way too rich to start with? My plan is to go with the five base gaskets as you suggested in the earlier thread. What would you expect to be the optimal jetting (acknowledging that every engine is different)?
Cheers

POR 15 needs to be the high temp one, the standard POR 15 won't stand the heat of an exhaust, tried it on my P2.

caustic soda dont touch rust ,but will de-coke the inside nicely .coke an limescale remover both contain phosphorous acid , it eats the oxygen from rust leaving iron powder behind . have given up using kurust as it seams to of been weakened ,i use hydrate80 ,available online an good stuff . an halfords exhaust paint seems to work ok . Just reading the full thread, Krust will not work on the exhaust, it will 'convert' the rust but the black film it leaves will peel off with heat taking your new top coat with it.
Best results I have had with BBQ paint or the high temp paint from Halfords etc. But really you need to media blast the pipe first, if there is any rust on it, it will just come back pretty quick.

henri and bryno, thanks for the input. Forgive my ignorance, but what does media blast mean?

Spend 3 hours t**tting the rust patches with a rolled up newspaper..... That or shot blasting.
