Hello all in my endless pursuit of the perfect plug colour i got talking to a chap who claims that although my plug is saying lean its probably wrong because with modern fuel you dont get enough colour. Saying that with modern engines and fuel the scoots that hes looked at show a better indication from the exhaust port. Any thoughts?

Your mate is correct to a certain degree. Modern motors run leaner on modern fuel but there's still plenty of colour to be had from a classic 2 stroke.
What colour is the plug? Have a search for sime66 'biscuit scale' of colour for a reference.

Normal run its light grey. Wot is custard cream (When the scoot is running and sounding right with smaller jet). To get a good colour it has to run very rich. There is no massive bogging but i can tell shes too rich. If any ones had the same i would like to know i havent ballsed me carb up and maybe this guy i was chatting with was serving up sage.

Light grey is not a good colour. The next colour is a red face from pushing it home. The light grey colour comes from particles from your piston aluminium melting on it. It will go very well at this colour. It is the maximum power but it won't last for long

Ive had similar problems with a similar plug colour. I put it down to a small air leak in the head. Personally i would take off the head and have a look for any signs of a leak. And the carb too if it's suspect. Lap them both with wet n dry.
Like Guruji says, it's on the ragged edge at the moment and will run very well..... but not for long.
The plug is the easiest thing to quickly check whats going on in your cylinder .. Dont ignore it.

Yeah thats what I thought about the plug , even with cleaner fuel, ethenol content etc i would still think its telling you something. Thanks for the input. Im going to investigate possible air leaks. Hadn't considered that.

If it was running ok for ages then suddenly the plug looks suspect, then yes, check for air leaks.
If its all newly built/unknown check for leaks anyway AND re jet accordingly
