Hi all,,
Could someone please in very very simple terms explain a real easy way of timing my engine please !!
I've got all the tools needed i.e flywheel puller , strobe gun, timing disk ,TDC tool however when I try and time my engine it all goes a'bit wrong and I can't get a proper reading!!
Cheers

ill give it a bash the TDC tool - using that, find TDC Mark a line across the flywheel and cases somewhere Using the timing disk - with the piston @ TDC set the timing disc to zero Rotate the flywheel back (anti clockwise) to your desired timing, for example @ 18' BTDC Mark the flywheel and cases again (@ 18') - somewhere you can clearly see it when 'strobing' (try Tippex, Marking pen etc) Set up your strobe gun, start engine... Top Tip: mind the wires when you kick start it When you pull the trigger on the strobe gun (or whatever you have to do), the marks you made earlier on your flywheel and cases (@ 18' BTDC) should line up perfectly when the gun is strobing ..... If the mark on the flywheel appears before the mark on your cases, you will need to 'retard' your timing - meaning, turn your stator plate clockwise, by the same amount of degrees it was out. Check it all again until the marks on the flywheel and cases lines up to your desired timing

vespasco,, your a star mate ..
I've asked for advice on many sites and this has been the most useful and easy to understand , I will give it a bash the weekend. I can clearly see where I was going wrong !!!! listening to other peoples crap advice !!

ill give it a bash the TDC tool - using that, find TDC Mark a line across the flywheel and cases somewhere to find tdc depending on which type of tdc tool you have i imagine you have a solid stop type so fit your stop in plug hole , your degree disc on flywheel , and a pointer anywhere on your engine case a piece of stiff wire is good as long as it points on the markings of the degree disc ok now turn your flywheel by hand until it stops hold the flywheel against the stop and line up zero on your degree disc with your wire pointer " your degree disc needs some resistance in turning that way it stays where you put it" now rotate your flywheel the opposite direction until it stops "don't touch the degree disc" read where the pointer is on your degree disc the amount of degrees "missing" from 360 you then divide by 2 this gives you tdc not hijacking you vespasco btw well that doesn't display like i wanted it to

Cheers guy's ,, I've just had a play using vespasco method,, I still had no luck. I could not for the love of me see the mark I made on the flywheel. I tried white marker & black marker pen and could not see the dam thing. Henri I may need your help next week.
Method i tried was
1.TDC tool in hole not the right one just a pin that moves up and down when piston hits. brought wrong one off ebay
2.Turned flywheel until piston just starts to hit the pin
3.attached timing disk and turned only the disk until reads zero using a piece of wire as pointer (made a mark on casing)
4. Turned flywheel & disk anti clockwise until I hit 18 degrees & made a mark on flywheel and casing
5. Strobed the engine and nothing . just a'lot of flashing
Henri I may need your help!!!!

***UPDATE***
Right guys PLEASE don't laugh but I've only just had a light bulb moment while watching Eastenders!!!
The TDC tool which I purchased which clearly say's what it does in the name had not been used correctly by ME!!!!!
Instead of bringing the Piston to the very highest point TDC then marking the casing etc.. I've been taking the piston to it's lowest point just before it hits the TDC tool then marking ... ahhhhhh
TDC not BOTTOM dead centre !! bloody numpty. That explains why I can't see anything.
