Hi Hully, You'd have no problems, if your son changed his own engine. Just a thought....

HAHA your right there Sime. the plan is this year to build a bit of a workshop (Mancave) in the back garden so work on the scoots can be done in comfort rather than waiting for the one nice summer day in the northeast to cram all the works into, then we can sit there together watching the sausage DVD (fnar fnar) to gather the knowledge to carry out engine rebuilds etc etc.

It's actually quite a quick and easy job; I've done it in my garden a few times now; I have no shed either. Lashing the front down to get her arse in the air helped – I made a board/ramp with a front wheel chock - even easier with two of you. Sausage shows disconnecting and removing the engine very well; he doesn't show putting it back in, but it's just the reverse; slow and steady once you've manhandled it up and got the main bolt through. Electrics is just five wires; three to CDI, two to loom - simple.

not watched sausage , so dont know if selecter box's covered .but a trick is to not disconnect the gear cables an just pop selecter box off an swap it to new engine . but as your going from "lazy start" to "real men kick" i'm thinking you best swap cables as i'm thinking theres a good chance selecters/gearboxes will be different . its always handy to have a few new cable inners around , as if there kinked/crushed by trunnions they can be difficult/impossible to re-thread thru trunnions . an 1 trick ive learnt fitting lumps on my own is instead of tryin to manhandle engine into frame , with wheel on prop it up an slide frame onto engine .with forks n front wheel on chassis moves easy an is much lighter .H

Sausage leaves the cables connected to the selector box, as you say, H. Good point though, about the change of selector box from early PX to EFL gearboxes; are they both EFL Hully?

Hi Sime,
mine is an 84 EFL and the boys is an 02 plate so should be the same I believe. I could just get him to do it whilst I watch from a deckchair drinking beer, that will be my best option. swopping engines I have done before will be using sausage more for the stripping/rebuilding of his cracked engine which will end up in my new scoot once I have located one as a project, watching DJ loone's thread has inspired me to do a chop again!!

hi h,
I have been checking them all but it is probably the wrong time to be looking for scoots as some have been ridiculously priced for what I want it for, the search will however continue.

i dont know , seen a few cheapys pop up recent , but they was smallframes , the discerning gentlemans choice of toy, seen a few large frames aswell . its the time of year when whole runnin scoots go up in value as sun n seasons here ,an projects go down .an people realise another winters been an theve not done owt an its time to let go . have a gander on t5 pages ,there always gettin there lumps blown an being sold as engine less chassis ,or bought n lump robbed an rest offered out . the t5 classic is a px frame n t5 lump ,minus the engine an its often sold cheap .
