Hi I have a scooter with no number plate, it was bought with no V5 however it does have vin and engine number present. It is defo a UK scoot so was wondering if its possible to get a HPI just using the VIN number so I can find out the original reg number, so I don thave to re-register it. thanks

I had a p2 with no v5 etc, Rang swansea who put me thru to a section who done a check on previous owner. Following this they then provided me with a V5 and reg.no . Obviously each set of circumstances is different and mine was that the scoot had been found by me and I was checking to see if I could be the new rightful owner. Spawney but true , good eh !

I used a data check facilty on ebay who could HPI using a VIN and he says there is no recorded details of the scoot even though there are remains of a UK number plate still on the bike. Whats that all about then?
Well it seems in this country if you dont have a number plate your knackered. Even if the DVLA have the VIN number of the vehicle they are not prepared to search for it. Basically you have to re-register and to do that you have to mot and insure the scoot and get a age letter. So if the scoot is damaged and you spend money restoring it etc. only to find when you come to register it its either scrapped or not your scooter then again you are knackered. its like banging your head against a brick wall.

Not entirely true mate, there is hope...
If the frame number is on the DVLA system you can get back the original reg even if you dont know what it is.
If it was never transferred onto the new DVLA system when it all went computerised, they will have no record of the reg so you need to reapply for an age related plate, that is probably what's happened to your scoot, same situation as mine.
If it was never transferred onto the new system, but you know what the number is (old picture or whatever) you can apply to keep that number, bit it's down to them if they allow that or not.
It's not the DVLA being unhelpful, it's just that if it was off the road when they went computerised and was never added to the system, they simply have no record..

thanks Bryno just hope it wasnt scrapped but should be ok. The remainder of the number plate was pretty modern as where the bolts to hold it on, as in new.
Just managed to remove the speedo as it was slightly melted covering the actual mileage, when removed I found it to be 666. Spooky as it had been in a fire.

Yikes, not sure you'd catch me riding that ..... I'm loath to even use the A666 to Bolton!

Dvla do keep chassis no. to reg plate records but they don't hold engine no. records (that what they told m on the phone. Its easy for an agency person at dvla to fob you off, but i yuo get genned up then they have no choice to follow procedure. The one i found was actually on its way to the tip as nighbours had complained to the council about fly tippers.
