My guess is that you get what you pay for. if I was buying a new lml engine I would only purchase from known retailer not e bayer I think sip do them but they are more expensive than the ones straight from india. It will be interesting to see what the other guys on this forum suggest, If a complete 5 port engine for £500 sounds too good to be true...it probably is.... hope you get some good tips from forum.

7 to 800 pounds from sip, looked at these engines plenty of times while trying to decide whether to get my 200 engine sorted or just buy a new 150cc from sip, makes you wonder who supplies sip though.

at least from sip an scooter centre cologne your dealing with a European supplier an have some protection. they buy from india but use genuine lml suppliers so get better engines .there also new ,careful reading of listings often reveals the cheaper engines are "re-manufactured" ,as in re-built in india ,maybe with good work an new components but bearings/seals/etc used will be cheapest no-brand ones available . any problems with a indian supplier an your only recourse is thru indian courts, with a 15-20 year backlog .tho saying that my local piaggio dealers been waiting a year for sip to replace px panels that turned up defective .there saying coz customer removed packaging an put them on scoot there now "used" an non-returnable , how else was he supposed to discover there defective . If you are prepared to spend a £500/600/700 on a new 150 motor, then restore you 200 engine. Its a no brainer really. I was thinking of buying a 125/150 engine recently and saw some indian ones on ebay...like Henri says, read further and you realise they're actually refurbished. They werent that cheap either. Judging by the photos alone.... i wouldnt touch them. Theres a good chance i will be in India soon. i ll be re-united with my Vespa piaggio badged 150 Now that does need a new engine!! but i will likely restore it, just for fun/time-pass. Thankfully the few miles to the local market is all downhill so it gets there fine. Coming back, fully laden with supplies and 'hitch-hikers', with no brakes, sometimes no oil, is another story but its only ever broke down once. It was the cdi. Im so tight, i haggled the mechanic down from £1.50 to 80p (supplied and fitted) Sorry, off topic.... I must be getting excited! Im hoping to find one or two suppliers of quality parts. I know of one, in one of the areas i will be going to. Im going to be searching for some quality TDH gearboxes. Ive had one in my pinasco for about 10,000 miles and the cruxiform/gears etc are barely worn. Even although i had a brwnd new piaggio cruxat hand, I just turned the cruxiform round during my previous rebuild and will carry on using it, hopfully for another 10,000 miles. Im very impressed! So there are 'some' good quality parts in India! Anyone have a wants lists!

Digressing slightly off thread, but has anyone bought any larger items from India through eBay? I'd like a chrome front rack, and can get one for £50 delivered, but I'm conscious I might be hit with import duty which mightn't make it such a bargain

^ fair chance you'll get hit and also factor in the courier handling charge for collecting the duty.. I got stung on importing stuff from Japan

Is import duty based on weight, value or both?

I believe its on the value of goods The only time ive been charged import duty (about £30) was for a massive solar panel with a value of £180 Ive been sent a couple of things from india never had to pay. £50 worth... If that is half the price of buying from uk then id take a gamble. For some reason, i think if its over £100 then you will likely be charged.

It was looking like about £25-30 cheaper than UK, but I've just found a couple of UK sellers at between £50 and £60 delivered. Result! Thanks for the duty info, always useful to know these things

import dutys on the value of goods bought ,from 2% to 5% depending on what item is , vehicle/luxury/etc . mostly on £50 or less customs-excise dont bother .an most indian firms are aware that if they mark parcel as a "sample" or for a private buyer duty isnt payable ,or drop declared purchase cost so duty isnt collected . i have had ups try an get £3.75 from me for duty paid on my behalf , as they'd already delivered just emailed back saying they shouldnt of spent on my behalf without my permission an never heard anymore . for a explanation of whats taxable you can wade thru the www.gov.uk.customs/excise website , an if it makes any sense to you your a better man than me . an vespaco ,how big a suitcase are ya taking , big enuff for a new SIL gp200 engine per chance , there about 600 on fleabay but knowing india ya could easy chip that down to 400 in person . tell em ya a farmer n love/respect/revere ya cows ,an ya granny met mahatma ,an youve a son needing a "good wife" , works everytime .H

Its all twistnt**t nowadays., or Baja Pulsar/Suzuki Samurai/Honda Hero I do plan to go south so you never know!? If i find a cheap way of shipping a few scoots/bikes/spares to uk i will certainly let you know.
If anyone has any experience of doing this , please let me know

i looked into the customs duty /vat issue and on a £440 engine inc . postage it would have been about £100. but i was a bit worried about the delivery this side of the water as they mostly use indian post to send everything!!
