Hi all. Starting back at uni 20 years since my first degree, so decided to join the moped/scooter ranks. Got me a 2005 Piaggio Liberty 2-stroke RST 50cc which seems to have been well looked after.
Only issue I have is that it will only start (using the starter button) on full throttle (and when cold, only after a few goes). After that it seems to run fine. I'm not sure this is how it's supposed to work. Anything obvious I can check?

And the warning! Will have a look on fleabay now. Had another go earlier and noticed fuel squirting out of the exhaust pipe (engine side of the silencer) when turning over. I'm guessing it's not supposed to do that either.

nope ,unless you want to be rocket powered , sorry ive no experience with liberty 2 stroke rst engines ,so unless there similar to zip 2 strokes havent much of a clue .i think they might be but not sure , might mean its not your choke but something else , a stuck fuel tap flooding carb,or stuck valve in secondary air box letting too much fuel into the semi-catalytic exhaust system , sorry i'm not much more help , but exhaust should be gas tight from engine to tail pipe so fuel shouldnt be able to leak out of it .are you sure its coming out an not dripping down from the tank/tap just above it , H

It was definitely coming out of the exhaust pipe as when I was cranking it hard it changed from a drip to a splutter. It starts in the end (on half to full throttle) and doesn't seem to leak then, but the exhaust does seem to get mighty hot. I probably need to take it on a longer run and see what happens, but first I need to go buy a helmet!

Think you may be on to something with the choke diagnosis. Started up on full throttle again at the weekend (cue more fuel dripping out), left it running for a while, then switched off. Started up fine when warm with no throttle at all (as it should be, I presume) which might well indicate the auto choke not working and too much fuel flooding the carb by having to open throttle wide to start when cold. Have ordered a new choke, and she's booked in for a service on Wednesday now too. I might have a look to see if anything has become disconnected in the mean while.

Right - quick update that may be useful for other Liberty owners. Bike went in to local Piaggio indie workshop for a service. They diagnosed a duff fuel tap, perished tyres, a leaking carb and a blowing exhaust. Rather than pay £200 for them to sort it, I ordered two new tyres and a fuel tap from Pedparts for £70 and set to work this weekend. Tyres changed (relatively easy), fuel drained and fuel tap replaced. Refilled and checked that vacuum was stopping fuel going into the carb when bike was off (it was - good). Started up but still lots of fuel coming out of exhaust. Had a cup and tea and realised that if carb had been getting flooded with fuel, then it's most likely still in there. So disconnected fuel line and kicked it over a good few times and got it running. Ran for a good minute or so on the fuel that was in the carb before finally cutting out. Reconnected fuel line and kicked over. Started straight away. Put it all back together and started it on the starter the next day with no throttle – BINGO! Started first time and no fuel coming from exhaust. Basically it was the fuel tap flooding the carb.
