What are the chances of a complete novice, who knows nothing about resterations {and I mean NOTHING, engine, paint, electrics. not a clue} buying a late 70's model vespa and fixing it up. Can it be done with just book reading, internet advice, I even live pretty close to a vespa specialist, so im willing to call and ask if he would mind pointing me in the right direction but he might not as iv never really met the bloke.. So what do you's think???

Hi, I've just got into scootering and know practically nothing about them apart from how to ride lol.
A restoration is a massive job as better qualified people than me will tell you and it will be very time consuming but very rewarding. For a complete novice I would say it would be too much without a lot of help but thats just my opinion ;-)

I think I might agree with that. You might be better saving up a bit and buying one that's already been restored professionally. Depends who your vespa chap is, but he might persuade you to buy a new model. Buy a copy of Scootering and look in the Scooter Trader section, and the adverts throughout the magazine, and also www.scooterpages.co.uk might have a few companies there too.

As long as you know how to use a spanner and a screwdriver there's nothing to be scared of. There will be a few bits that will be out of your range but with the knowledge and advice available on this site and others should you come unstuck there will always be someone able to give you a nod in the right direction. 1 you get to learn how to fix your own scoot and 2 you get the immense satisfaction of being able to say "I did that, or at least the majority of it!" Chequebook restorations are for Mods and girls.... DIY ROOLS!!

Steady on Joey, we leave that kind of abuse for SBW and the AFSC forum!

Personally I'm not technically minded so I can change my wheel and spark plug and thats about it. Anything else the its the RAC lol
I have no inclination whatsover to spend months doing a restoration when I could be out on my 06 modded up PX - each to their own!

Spence, it worked!!! It was a bet to see who would bite first and you had my vote ;D A scoot is a scoot whether modded up or cutdown but I really do believe that people should have a good working knowledge of their motor so as to able to carry out preventative maintenance as well as being able to fix it when it goes wrong. Anyway how goes it down in the land of webbed toes???

Glad my predictability pleases you, but just as Simon's always the first to bite on the AFSC forum, I have to be here because I'm the moderator.
Well, not having club nights or rideouts to go on means I have more free time evenings and weekends.

Hi Guys, Thanks for all your replies!!!
Whats the SBW and the AFSC? sorry if it makes me a total scooter Doh!
And rock on Joey, I totally agree with you, Im just a bit scared. What I think Im going to do is bye a run around scooter, I think another ET model because I cant really afored a newer model and Im not a big fan of the PX style {SORRY} then save up for a mid 70's style restoration project.
