Take it all out again and check the torque settings when reassembling. Sounds like it is 'rattling' itself loose. Either that or take it a bit easier with the gear changing..

Bought it from local scooter shop, but since then heard a few tales about said shop, so could be a cheap copy. looks like i'll have to strip it and have another go, many thanks mick.

end of june this year is too early for even a cheap cruciform to wear out... i think... anyway, if the cruciform was not tightened well on its axis, it might be that after a short wear , gears will jump. it a matter of milimeters only. so, before you dismantle the engine again, its worth checking if the cruciform is loose and can be tightened more. you do that by removing the automatic gear (where the two cables go) and there you will see the cruciform axis. it has an end which can be tightened by an open ranch. try to tighten it carefully. if it does tighten a bit, maybe that was the problem (cruciform was not in synch with the automatic gear position). vespamaintenance.com/engine/cruciform/cruc3.jpgits a 10-15 minute job, so it might be worth the check.
