Unfortunately my Vespa is out of action for a few weeks, as am I.
On my way home from work last Friday a car pulled out on me from a side street. I saw it luckily at the last minute and slammed the breaks on, the scooter went over, i was thrown to the floor, and the scooter went skidding into the car. I was a split second from hitting it full on at roughly 25mph. The road in the opposite direction was queuing, and he said someone flashed him to tell him it was ok to pull out. Cheers for that. Quick trip to A&E in the ambulance, luckily no breaks, but im in agony with my left arm/shoulder. Scooter gets picked up tommorrow for repair, hopefuly it's mainly just paintwork and a new bumper thats needed. Thankfuly the police attended and took statements, and he was very apologetic and sorry aparantly so hopefuly there will be no problem with the insurance...
Has anyone got any advice?

advice ,learn to bounce better , sorry couldnt resist that 1 , good to hear ya aint permanently damaged as scoots can be always fixed, humans not so, an get ready for a flood of unsolicited get rich quick phone calls , big promises n hidden costs an also subtle encouragements to commit insurance fraud ,careful of em,specially if they offer vehicle hire whilst yours is of road ,they say its free but any hitch in the claim an you get the bill , an if insewerants trys to write of ya scoot get a independant engineers/mechanics report ,as they can get written off for economic reasons not damage , H

Cheers everyone, and good advice Henri. It's getting picked up today so will await the phone call when they assess the damage. I already declined the offer of a replacement bike - i said i cant really steer 1 handed. It 100% shouldnt be a write off and reckon its going to cost around £500 tops to get it back to what it was unless there is mechancial damage so will await with interest what they say.

jesus h christ on a stick, you could buy a new one almost for that , have they offered a settlement amount yet ,never take the first offer they can always do better , depending on the catergory of write off ,d's can be returned to the road ,A's n B's are crushed ,an C's can be broken for bits ,if its a D you might be able to get a deal from them where you get a big cheque less the scrap value of scoot an keep the scoot ,turn cheque into a build fund an prob have change left over , an def claim for ya injurys ,doctors notes n physio reports =enuff for a new scoot to ride whilst re-building n customising/tuning ya old one . an the crankcase damage is prob grazing/scratching from ya slide ,unless it hit the kerb i doubt its cracked /crackered , i think ya need a independant mechanics/engineers report , as that £2400 is at top rates whereas insewerants pay trade/mates rates , theiving gits , where was scoot recovered too ,your gaff or a garage ,or the dealer you bought it from ,as some places figure insewerants have loads of cash n inflate the bill , its your right to shop around an find a cheaper/better deal .ya prob dont feel up to it at moment ,but if scoot aint at yours its going to be charged storage fees which soon mount up makin the sewerants want to take easy/quicker option n write it off , i think i'd take rab up on his kind offer if ya cant store at yours , physical possesion of the scoot=better bargaining position , an also theres always a ad in scootering for a lawyer who specilises in this stuff ,an a phone call to suss ya rights cost pennys ,i dont like lawyers meself ,on a level with traffic wardens/mass-murderers/people who interfere with dogs n suchlike , but ,worth a thought ,doing a deal with the devil an all, just be sure to read the fine print ,twice, H

well....7 weeks on, and i'm still no closer to getting paid out or finding out what category write off is going to be. All i know is Aviva are scumbags, who are delaying and delaying despite the fact i've had a replacement motorbike for 3 weeks so it's costing them money which is baffling. The replacement bike is a Yamaha ybr125 and i don't enjoy riding it. My insurance company said there is nothing i can do and nothing they can do to influence a quicker outcome.

My persistence must have finaly paid off as i got a call 1st thing today.
This is the engineers report.
Impact. The machine has suffered a moderate blow, the point of impact is shown in the above diagram. Mechanical Status. Further to your instructions special attention was paid to the mechanical condition of this vehicle. We can confirm that on examination the engine started and ran without issue, all gears could be selected. Note. On close examination of the scooter we noted impact related damage to the right hand side of the machine, impact height being approximately 30 to 100 cm from ground level. Damage. New Parts Required:- Front Shield Rim, Belly Pan, Brake Master Cylinder Front, Clock Surround, Crank Case Rh, Crankcase Assembly, Fender, Handle Bar Cover, Headlamp Peak, Headlamp Rim, Leg Shield Panel Rh, Lever Kick Start, Mudguard Front, Selector, Side Panel Rh. Damage. Repairable parts:- Labour. Damage. Specialist parts:- Epa Charge, Estimate, Sundries. Status. The extent of the damage rendered the machine technically immobile. Temporary Repairs. In our opinion, temporary repairs would not be cost effective. R
An estimate for repairing the machine has been obtained in the sum of £597.00 plus the parts at Maker's list prices. Having calculated the time involved in this repair we consider this estimate to be reasonable. There is a specialist charge of £55.00. The cost of the necessary new parts would be approximately £1266.38 and the VAT liability on the total amount £383.68 giving a total repair cost of £2302.06 subject to undisclosed damage. Parts prices quoted are for guidance only and are subject to confirmation. We therefore recommend that this claim be dealt with on a total loss basis.
Salvage. We anticipate that the sale of the salvage will realise in the order of £686.00. Salvage Category. The Salvage Category is : Repair/Constructive TL 'D'. Salvage Disposal. The machine salvage has not been disposed of and remains at the inspection location. Settlement. We consider that an equitable settlement would be £1764.00, which represents the market value, less the salvage value, as your instructions were without prejudice we have not contacted the third party to agree a settlement figure

So - as long winded as all that is, my decision is do i take the £1764 cash, and damaged scooter and then do it up and use the bus whilst the wife needs the car, or just cut my losses, take the full £2450 they have offered, and in so losing out on £638.00. The £638 is basically the VAT that they dont have to give back.
The insurance company said they should insure it again as its a cat d but only if it passes the VIC/MOT once done back up - and i know you cant get it taxed until its had a VIC so is it worth all the hassle?

vic check is only to check its had road worthy repairs and its mot worthiness yes its worth it but for me and its purely a personal thought no influence intended fella id take the cash and buy pre disk model. you can get a decent looked after pre disk for 1500 or a grand and tart it how you want it. think im correct in also saying you cant claim for loss if it happens again on a cat D i could be wrong and its C but sure its D. i cant ride drive or work just had a heart attack at 46 so that's me sat bored for 6 weeks minimum . ive read my december issue of scootering at least 7 times i cant get to my local tesco for january copy good job i have my shed to tinker in

Jesus, that's terrible Rab, wishing you a speedy recovery. I've slept on it and it's in the back of my mind that it won't be worth anything if it gets nicked or in another accident if I do it up so I think you are right I should take the cash and start again with a pre cat model.

Post by henri on Jan 24, 2015 9:06:50 GMT
it will still have a value if repaired ,just 200-300 less coz it was a d-cat,an the quickest way back on the road is to take the cash n buy another ,if ya hunt about a pre-cat disc model could be found for that money ,with plenty of change to do it up, an ya insurance still runs a year so can be transfered ,well it did when my bike was nicked an i think its same for write offs, so am guessing your avatar piccy might change soon , middle of winter is best time to buy ,200 quid less coz most wont buy this time of year. an rab ,get a subscription to scootering an its dumped on ya door , an remember its "light polishing" dutys only ,dont make me ride 200 miles to padlock ya shed an glue you to the sofa , H

well, im back up and running, decided to get the salvage and sold it on for a profit, banked the cheque and picked up a new px yesterday. Exactly the same as the last one, but got a big chunk knocked off as it was pre-registered with 2 miles on the clock. I've only lost out on a couple of hundred quid in the end plus i'll get money back for the gear etc. Even had a session of accupuncture to assist with the physio on my shoulder.

I wont lie, it's made me apprehensive when its dark and the traffic is heavy in town at rush hour, car drivers as everyone knows are irrational at the best of times when the roads are busy and im trying to see 10 steps ahead when im filtering now. The insurance company disapointed me in how they treat you when you have a new bike as i think its ridiculous they dont have to pay back the VAT but they are the rules so it's the chance you take in buying new.
