Hi guy/girls I recently bought a brand new 64 plate Vespa Px125. I had had the bike for just over a month and am already experiencing problems I have done approx 230 km (hardly anything) Firstly the gear cable has streched, I know this is to be expected with a new bike, but it had already streched to the extent that the dots don't line up by about quarter of a turn. Meaning that when I'm in neutral there is a lot o okay in the left hand gear selector. I have also noticed that when I am sitting idle at traffic lights etc... That my bike is cutting out as if I've stalled even when the clutch is in !!.... An anyone shed some light on this ?.... Is this caused by my cable streched problem or could this be something else ? Secondly. I went to start my scooter at the weekend, and petrol was pouring from the carb and down over the engine !!!... After racking my brains, I have came to the assumption that the fuel indicator or float has became hamme at the bottom indicating that the engine needs more fuel pumped to it there for my bike is pumping petrol continuously to the engine !! Again if anyone could please help me with this I will be more than greatful. I am new to scootering and am a complete rookie. So please help !! As it stands, I phoned the shop where I bought the scoot and they said I'd only receive road side assistance if I was more than a mile away from my home. Obviously I refused to ride the bike a mile away whilst it's pouring out petrol. So the shop then gave me Piaggio's number, they were closed on Friday night when I called, and I'm gonna phone again on Monday. Also I could obviously try and sort the problem myself, but the bike is still under warranty and I don't want to risk taking anything apart and then getting the blame from Piaggio for breaking it and voiding te warrenty. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. I have waited a long time to get my scooter and am feeling very disappointed with my expietence !!.... Someone please tell me that this is a freak situation, and not a common occurrence ?? Thanks

Sounds like you need the cables tweaked and the nuts and bolts re-torqued, thats all. The shop you bought it from should surely do this as part of their service/warranty... Asking you to phone Piaggio sounds a bit suspicious when its such a simple job.

This is only my opinion; I don’t have experience of Piaggio warranties, but didn’t like the thought of you feeling bad about the purchase, so –
Don’t panic mate.
The gear lever and stationary stalling both sound like cable stretching and adjustments, and are nothing to worry about: · As your gear cables stretch you’ll lose the accuracy of the markings on your levers; expected and easily tightened and adjusted. · As your clutch cable stretches you’ll get some clutch drag, which will very probably be why you’re stalling when staionary; expected and easily tightened. I’ve never had the pleasure of having a Vespa under warranty’; just old bangers for my budget, so I don’t know what you have to do yourself, what’s meant to keep until a service, and what warrants going back to the garage. Sounds like they’re not being helpful though. We can easily take you through adjusting the cables, but whether you’re supposed to do it or not I do not know. As far as the carb leak is concerned, I’d say it’s deffo something needing to be sorted by them, immediately, under warranty, and not to be messed with. Probably not a biggy, but probably not for you to get involved with fixing. Your gauge is nothing to do with your carb, but if it’s your float or needle, I’m sure you’re not supposed to be taking the carb apart yourself. – Have you looked under the filter to see if it’s coming out of the carb body or maybe just the fuel line/banjo is loose? Are you turning your fuel on and off properly? Time to be firm with shop and do a bit of shouting and swearing to get some lazy arses moving I’d say, but not things to worry about. As far as roadside assistance is concerned – f**k that; you want it collected from your home, fixed under warranty, and returned as it should be.

the dot's on the handle bars don't usually line up bang on, there are lines under the handle bar that should line up when setting the cables, sounds like your's just need adjusting, you also have a fuel leak at the carb, (probably the fuel line banjo screw needing tightened) that would also cause the scoot to cut out. doesn't sound anything serious but the shop should have been a lot more helpful than they were.

agree with above , have found local piaggio dealer much more accomadating when you use the magic spell , "i'm ringing trading standards an askin them" , works wonders , an also check the telegraphs honest jon's website n e mail him , he'll send ya a link to relevant case law an is a good name to drop into any e mails to piaggio(uk) , otherwise its struggle on til the first 500 mile service an throw it back at dealer n refuse to accept back until right ,a claim in small claims court costs 18 quid an you dont need to pay a brief ,where as piaggio will have to , there legal costs will be way more than price you paid on scoot ,simple economics will force em to be nice ,just name both local dealer n higher ups in piaggio (uk) in claim n demand there appearance at court , shud get em shifting ,an when they settle ya get your costs back n as ya representing yourself you get to do the maths ,if ya get a no win no fee brief read the smallprint twice n shop around ,as some claim 60-70% of winnings as there fee . depending on weather you paid cash/card or hp. if you got it on hp drop the scoot off at the shop be ready to phone phone the credit company and say youve handed it back and state your reasons it takes a while to sort out but your agreement will be canceled ( faulty goods) the shop will kak its pants. if you've paid on a card you have cover that's provided by the card company automatically contact them get your money back (faulty goods )if you paid cash trading standards and court may be your only course. don't try fix it yourself as they will use that to void the warranty be prepared to walk out leaving the scoot behind and throwing the keys at them. tell them to sort it or give you your money back

Thanks a lot for the terrific response guy !!... I'm glad my gear/clutch situation doesn't paper to be anything to worry about and seems to be expected with a new bike. I'm just off te phone to Piaggio, who are gonna contact the shop to see if they can sort out the problem. Failing that. I will be using the threat of taking it to trading standards (henri)... And I will be threading to ask for my money back (Rab) as I am paying the scooter on HP !! Thanks again. I'll keep you posted

as youve got it on hp ya rights are slightly diff than outright purchase , they still technically "own" the scoot til last payment is made ,dont do credit myself, coming or going, so not sure , as above try honest jon ,he'll email ya back with revelant case law , more ammo for the big showdown at dealers , bullsh*t might baffle brains ,but good research will convince em , otherwise a appointment with local CAB ,citizens advice burea ,they will know the crack or have the resources to find it in ,H

Thanks for the advice,
I bought the scooter from eclipse motorcycles in Tranent, Scotland. Although if ather try and keep relations good as my initial impression if the place was good, and they were always very helpful throughout the buying process !.... I dare say that they'll agree to travel that extra mile to pick up the scooter from my house after Piaggio have spoken to them. If not I'll be going all the way until I'm satisfied that the bike is back to it's original state (fixed, and no horrible petrol steaks all down the engine).... Not only this but my newly laid tarmack driveway is ruined too !! :/
I'll keep you posted....

The shop phoned to say that Piaggio has authorised them to pick up the scooter from my house, the only problem now is that they use a desperate company for uplifts, so I'm waiting on them getting back to me tomorrow with a time/date for pick up.... THE BALL IS ROLLING !!!

Problem solved. After a few phone calls back and forth between Piaggio and Eclipse (the shop I bought it from) Piaggio agreed that the scooter should be picked up from my home, and taken away to fixed. The uplift company was a deprecate company and sent not 1 but 2 flat bed lorries (the kind you see slugging static caravans up and down the motorway) to pick up my scooter. So besides it looking ridiculous on the lorry they took it away no problem.... Within 2 days Eclipse had phoned to say that they'd sort my scooter. The float had a small crack in it and fuel was therefore filling up inside the float causing it to sink to the bottom, and then indicating that there was no fuel in the carburettor. They simply replaced the float. Problem solved ! Eclipse also adjusted my clutch cable and changing gear is now a lot easier I don't know if they adjusted the idling, but the scooter is now ticking over a lot better too when sitting stationary. Whether or not this is just because the float is no longer dodgy, I don't know. I don't really care !! Overall happy with the outcome, and I'm back on the road Thanks for all your advice

Excellent news that kicking arses did the job. Also mate, those three jobs are all things you'll be able to do for yourself without thinking by the time the warranty runs out, so you can chill out a bit and enjoy your scooting.
