Hope somebody can help with this problem I've got...I'm acting as guarrantor to my 25 years old grandson who is about to qualify as a doctor and he needs transport to be on call for the last stage of his qualification...The problem is that I've never been on a scoooter in my life and the scooter will be in my name with my grandson as a named rider...We are due to take delivery of the machine next week and I'm fearful of not being able to take it away from the dealer without my having to prove my competence even as a novice rider with no intentions whatsoever of ever riding the machine. Can anybody please advise me of the legal situation I find myself in.I do not want the insurance in my name. Thank you

It'll need insuring in his name, no matter how you go about it.
I'd ask the shop to deliver it.... from there it's out of their hands.
Legally, as far as I know (with 30 years of scooters behind me to support this), you only need insurance if you're going to ride the machine, not just for owning one. I'm not sure how you'd stand if it was stolen though, I'd talk to a local insurance broker for advice asap.

Anybody having trouble renewing?
I got a letter from Bennetts telling me that I don't fulfil their criteria any more and they wouldn't be giving me a renewal quote.
Went on a comparison site and out of about 20+ companies, only 4 would consider me, the rest just spout out the 'do not fulfil our criteria' line. This apparently is to do with modifications to the bike which amount to an Ancillotti seat and a SIP road pipe. I didn't even mention the seat grab rail and non standard mirrors. I have full no claims and am a boring old fart as well.
I eventually renewed with Swinton over the phone (£97, price fans) and this was only after some "I need to speak to my supervisor about the exhaust" type shenanegins.
So who out there has a completely standard scooter then?

I remember being asked when renewing motorcycle insurance if there were any performance modifications.. No I said (true as 118bhp was enough for me). She then asked if I'd uprated the brakes. Again I said no, but would it lower my insurance if I did (in my head, better braking = better stopping and less likely to hit something). No, it'd put the cost up! Why says I? It's because it might encourage you to take greater risks and go faster knowing you can stop better!!! I said could I get my insurance for a lot less then if I took the brakes off and threw them away.......... then I put the phone down!

I've all but stopped using price compare sites now, you need to talk to a human. Or something close anyway.

Update:
Bennetts have rung me to tell me they have had a re-think and they will now allow me the privilege of renewing with them.
Erm, how does 'kiss me swingers' sound?

It sounds like a perfectly fair answer to me.

Carole Nash every time.......... not the cheapest but quite possibly the best, and no I'm not on commission. The only problem I've had with them is their renewals, silly prices........... wait for their phone call and then haggle like f**k......... last year they wanted £157 fully comp, got them down to £99 then had to add £18 for riding other bikes, £117 in total, but that includes full Euro breakdown.

Interesting. I've never had anything but taking the p*sh with Carole Nash, their lowest ever was about £15 more than I ended up paying, their highest almost double. It's the usual thing about age/experience/location/value of machines though I suppose.

Yeah, Carole Nash best for me but with five bikes and the expensive one being the Ducati 916 I thought 420 fully comp was OK. Most companies on multi bike policies would only cover for four bikes max at any one time. Worst part is the extra fees if you change the policy ie. add a private registration plate say to one bike or sell one bike and want to add another in its place

my 2p worth Dropped Carole Nash this year, now with Footman James They dont charge for additional classics if you are a 'club' member, you just pay for one bike, Carole Nash charge a bit more for each So I joined the veteren scooter club for £10 and got 3 classics covered on agreed value for £130 Stiffed me when I added my modeern bike though

Bryno. Got my Caterham 7 with Footman James and they've been OK so far with me for about 6 years. Classic policy etc.. It was the 916 Ducati that made my policy with CN a bit more. Now sold it and a 20bhp Lammie is taking its place once the porting to the reed valve set up is correct etc.

Slightly off topic but... my Caterham is with REIS (as I get track day cover), I hadn't thought to put scoots, car and bike with the same insurer but I guess Footman James could do all that and there may be multi policy discout?, I'll try that in the spring..

OK, way-off topic, but my Caterham is set-up as "The Prisoner" due to my first seeing the Lotus 7 on there!!!

First ever 2 wheel quaot on 2001 ET4, 44yr old 'virgin' riding on CBT. Decent prices from £111 up to £200+ but amazing T&C's
Cheapest (MCE) has excess of £750 - is my scooter even worth that much? Best excess is £150, but from eBike. Any others had bad service when claiming? We all hope to never claim, but expect proper service when we do.

Your quotes all seem so low! Mine is £79 a month! With a £500 excess. But tbh being 20 and never owning a vehicle in my life doesn't help . It also is a brand new px with theft cover!

Yep. age (and therefore what's seen as potential youthful exhuberence) and a brand new vehicle with a higher repair costs etc = higher premium. About the only advantage to getting older is cheaper insurance.................................

scooter insurance tends to be cheaper than car insurance and this is also a reason why many people are preferring this alternative type of vehicle.

MCE for me.
107 quid for 15 months on a 1982 P200. Including breakdown, helmet, leathers and something else that memory has let me down on!
I don't wear leathers but if a claim goes in I will claim like I dress like the "Gimp" in Pulp Fiction!!
