Arkela has given me a day-pass, so this morning I’m heading off up Dartmoor to watch the Tour of Britain chaps drag themselves over Haytor again. I’ve whacked the muffs on, got all the best laybys waymarked on the SatNav (not really ), and got toolbox stuffed and sorted – every eventuality covered. A decent test for my rebuilt engine too. Dib dib dib, dob dob dob: be prepared ……….

be prepared eh ,dib-dib dah-dah doh doh ,sorry slipped into a police riff then, scoots lookin good , bit doubtful bout watchin sweaty guys in lycra on two wheels without engines ,but hea ,what ever rings ya bell/floats ya boat, like the toolbox sticker, got the scootering "touch my scoot can lead to death/maiming" under my seat, where me an only a thief could see it, the "when in doubt, accelerate" 1's on my bikes tank, an got to say , arkela eh,sounds exotic/eastern european ,you lucky dog ,nxt time put her on pillion an explore some local highways n byways with a pub lunch thrown in, ya never know ,might be a new scoot convert , a couple that scoots together stays together ,so long as fastest 1 looks in there mirrors occasionaly,an a unsheduled breakdown/layby hit is always better when a "afternoon nap" behind a convenient hedge/hay bale stack on offer, passes the hour before recovery truck turns up ,H

I copied HANDS OFF . . . SHE’S MINE from the 1980 Beat single; it seemed appropriate for a scooter, and I was into all that 2Tone/ska revival malarkey in my early hooliganising days. (Saw them at Hammersmith Palais, 1983 – excellent live too). Wanted a one-off logo, and haven’t seen it on another scooter: I’ll leave you with your own image of Arkela’s exotic eastern mystery; it is a Hindi/Urdu name, but no more clues. It’s all I want my licence for really; to be able to take M’lady on the back (yes ‘on’, not ‘up’); she’d never ride her own – 5ft and can’t even steer a shopping trolley. Didn’t need any laybys the other day, but agree that some warm and wobbly distraction would ease the pain of dead scooter recovery; remember, as long as your adequately tooled, laybys can be fun days out too!
