Anticlockwise, and yes you can use a screwdriver and hammer but you can buy the correct tool (a C spanner) from most scooter shops. If you use a screwdriver, then the odds are that you'll need to replace the locking collars too.

ok latest update is i cant find a c spanner anywhere so if i am really careful tapping it with a screwdriver and mallet will work?and not ruin the nut or is there another way beside the 2 aforementioned ways

In the past I have used an old screwdriver with the blade ground down a bit to take the sharpness off or a 5mm flat punch . If you take it easy you will be fine

Where are you? Any Vespa dealer/scooter shop should stock them.

Ah... Hammer and screwdriver it is then Seriously though, measure the diameter of the fastener, and go to your local tool shop and say you need a C spanner to fit this size. They're a common enough tool

motorbikes use the same style of nut on the fork stem so local bike shop's might have the tool, probably do same as me tho, hammer an soft-brass drift ,H

Tons of wd40 or similar, before you start using anything. As for the bearings, they are loose but no big deal you can buy caged ones or just make sure you know how many are there and save one at least, they are probably shot so will need replacing.
Posted your details about the Vespa on the VVC but no information as of yet. I have been asked for a couple of pictures. If you PM, I will send my email address and you can send the pictures this way. The more detailed the pictures the better. Gary
