thought id kill 2 birds with one stone in this thread ive re painted my side panel picture below basically sanded it back to the metal and re painted i dident do any filling except with filler primer i dident want it to look like a new panel on a 33 year old scooter i want it to look its age but good .now my question is i dident sand the glove box back to metal instead sanded it back for the paint to key to it and it reacted very very bad with the paint underneath its cracked all over do i need to take it down to bare metal or is there a primer sealer that wont react with the old paint someone will probably say use oxide but i think that will make the paint too thick on the panel like a 3 pack paint any advise ? before i take it to bare metal top picture is before mudguard still to paint horn cover is now orange with black grill you can see the reaction on the glove box wich i have to leave like it is until next weekend Attachments:

Is this a Salt on Chips/ Chips on Salt issue? Substitute Synthetic and Cellulose paint finish. One way is OK as in Salt on Chips is OK, but................!!!

the filler primer i got is cellulose based acrylic with rust preventer so its says on the tin so should cover all types but as you can see it most definitely did not work when i tried sanding a patch back it was like it had melted the old paint underneath it was all sticky just to be sure i tried a non acrylic standard primer and it did the same its looking like i may have to get the orbital sander out and go to the metal or nitro morse the bugger

think i may have found my problem online the thinners in the filler primer are soaking into the original paint sending it soft and lifting it causing the crows feet so its back to bare metal we go

i had the same thing, turned out it was the two stroke oil where i had been putting it in and out and not wiping it off properly (now we all know how important it is to wipe properly!!) the oil had sunk into the paint and when new paint hit it it went all silly and crazy! had to rub back to bare metal etc.
