Hi all, advice please.
I am stripping my scoot for engine repairs and a paint job this weekend. I also want to replace the front mudguard as mine has been chopped and looks a pig. How does the mudguard come off? do the forks have to come out? If so is this a big job? I have seen a special tool on Beedspeed for the steering bolt, do I need one of these or can you do it with regular sockets . Don't want to grind to a hault because of one bolt I can't undo. Can't wait to get cracking, if you saw my T5 in the flesh you would know why, looks and runs like a pig.
But I love it.

Hey Gaz, headset top and bottom off (large bolt on back), undo brake cable at bottom, you need a special spanner to undo the top of the forks (costs £8 odd), drop the forks out, couple of bolts on the guard, job done.. May have missed a bit of detail there, but you get the picture

Cheers bryno, so I do need the tool, I will have a full compliment of Vespa tools soon Not a bad thing I suppose, except I hope to never use them again. Thanks again.

IIRC the big side of the two-headed sparkplug spanner that comes as standard in a Vespa toolkit fits the headstock bolt.
Two tools for the price of one.

A Mk 1 T5 doesn't have the same arrangement as a PX headset, no bolt to undo! Instead it's a ring similar to a normal bearing ring and then a captive washer. You can buy the special T5 steering nut spanner or use the tried and tested method of a screwdriver and hammer in the nut cutaways. You usually have to end up buying a new top nut whichever method you use as when fitted a small indent is knocked into it to stop it coming loose, to be honest it's a pain in the arse whichever way you go about it!
