Looking at my Haynes manual it doesn't look too complicated inside the gearbox.
Is it wise to open it up and see if anything looks wrong? as I still have my problems with 2nd & 3rd, more 2nd not selecting properly or sometimes at all. The cruciform has been mentioned, is this serious? is it difficult to change.

hi i used scooter help to show me how to rebuild my engine they show how to replace the cross on a px200 (t5 is the same) . not a hard job and they show you how to do it without removing barrel to split cases my p125x was hard to get in gear and jumped out , so i recon your cross is worn out here's the link www.scooterhelp.com/tips/engine/shift.cross.lf.vespa.htmlp.s buy a piaggio cross and not a cheap copy

Thats great thanks.
My symptoms are that 2nd gear doesn't really exist, only when it feels like it, and 3rd jumps out but only for a split second so it jerks and tries to throw you over the front. Thanks for the confidence boost and the link, any special tools required?

Cruciform is not hard to replace, did one on my PX (err, that was in 1985 so don't ask for any tips ;D), you'll see if it's 8uggered as the edges will look worn..
P.S no special tools that I recall, just a few spannas and circlip pliars

you will need to pull the flywheel off... even with my (very good n large selection due to the landrover) tools I ended up having to call into a scooter shop with the engine in the back of the landy to get it pulled. Worth spending the £5ish on one if you are doing the order. You have a catch 22 also... when i pulled mine to bits it wasnt just the cruciform but also 2nd/3rd gear that were worn. Mine also had broken the selector box, guys in the scooter place said...'ill bet when you pull that you will need 2nd 3rd, it will have been snatchy on change and jumping out'
The clutch tool.... well you could buy one, I modified an old socket (tells you how in the haynes book of lies) you could get another nut that goes on the clutch and call into a garage get then to zip a weld so the nut is stuck on a socket. that way you have your own tool. Modified socket was a bit of a pig to do. Ill prob get 2 new nuts when i come to rebuild, one to go on the engine the other to make a tool out of.

Thanks for that, I think I will leave it until I have had a look before buying gears as they are a bit more expensive. I have all my other parts now so will proceed at the weekend.

Hi mate,
It's worth just backing off your selector box first before you do anything drastic! There's a taperd pin that can sometimes drop out from the cable wheel, this gives selecting problems and can cause gears to jump!
