Hi all, any ideas on this one please?
This is quite difficult to describe, but i'll have a go.
My T5 on hard acceleration backs off for a second, almost like you are backing off the throttle when you are not.
It only does this though in 2nd and 3rd gears.
I think it might be a gearbox problem as occasionally it also misses gears, when a gear is selected on the run I get no gear, hi revs and sometimes a "graunching" sound from the gearbox, hope this makes sense.
1st and 4th gears are fine all the time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the less than technical info, I am no machanic.

I think the 'holding back' is unlikely to be gear related, more likely ignition or fuel problem, do the usual checks, clean plug, check cap not damaged, clean out the carb - jets filter etc..
On the gear selection issue, before doing any major strip down worth taking the selector unit off, clean and re-grease, check the cables are not slack, ensure when you are not in gear there is even play in each cable (so you know the selector is balanced), also worth changing the oil in the box if it has not been done in a while..

hi, as bryno said, the holding back is not a gear problem, but most likely a fuel problem, (and maybe an almost foul sparkplug? take this simple check into consideration)
regarding gear selection, better hope its not a worn cruciform, which to replace, you need to split the engine cases.. i would try to adjust the gear selector first and see if it solves the problem.

Forgot to mention that I have already replaced the gear cables, this had no effect at all. Would a gear oil change help?
Also the holding back problem, why, if it is fuel or ignition, would it only do it in 2nd & 3rd gear?
Will do a service at the weekend I think, and replace the spark plug, air filter etc.
This T5 has done 16k miles, I thought that was fairly low, what do you think?
Thanks for your tips so far.

You may only feel the pulling back in certain gears when the engine is under particular load conditions.. reason I say it's probably not gear related is that to have a gearing problem causing so much drag so you actually feel it holding the engine back it would be a major gearbox failure, which you'd probably know about by now as the cogs shoot through the casing Yep, certainly worth trying gear oil change, it should be done every 12 month or 3k IIRC. As Rudi says it could be cruciform, but I believe the T5 has a much improved one fitted over the older PX's so wear on these is not common. My T5 is on 17K and gears are smooth as, so unless it's been abused/not had oil changes, be suprised if there is any major box damage... Hope the service does the trick!

Any idea roughly the oil capacity of the gearbox? My haynes manual just says fill to the fill hole level, but I don't know how much to buy.
Have changed the spark plug and ordered a new air filter. Fingers crossed.

Gear oil change, plug change and filter clean made no difference at all. I still think its a gear box problem. 2nd gear definately has selection problems, sometimes it goes in and sometimes not, and still in 2nd & 3rd it backs off under acceleration. I have a dilemma i think. At least its rideable, 1st to 4th isn't so bad haha.
