I had oil leaking onto the back brake shoe and it was very dodgy for emergency stops, so I took the engine off, split the casings, replaced bearings, seals and gaskets, and piston rings then re-assembled.
When I kick started (without petrol) there was a crunching noise coming from the engine area. I took out the spark plug and tried kick start again, this time there was no crunching noise.
Anyone know if it's safe for me to go ahead and put petrol in and start OR is there something wrong mechanically?
First time mechanic.

Doesn't sound good to me , really you should not hear anything mechanical when you kick it over, without the plug in it should kick smoothly with just the sound of compression.. Have you tried starting it now?
