well going through the engine getting it all fully stripped and ready for blasting before I set to building it all.... the casing is broken. The area where one of the head studs screws into the casing is cracked and a chunk missing. This engine has had every kid and his dog inside it. I cant belive how much butchering has gone on, there is loads of damage where some muppet hasn't had a clue. its obvious they have use screwdrivers to 'pry' bits.
SO i need to find a complete PX125 engine that hasnt been messed about with or it all goes in the bin!! I dont like to kill machines but it's just not worth my time or effort now.

Sure you'll find something suitable on Ebay mate, should be pretty reasonable price wise seeing as how many 125 engines get discarded when people trade up to bigger motors...

just looked through all 48pages. everything has been messed with It wouldnt be so bad if it was just a case of the engine needing sorting. To get this on the road I need as a min 2 tyres £30 Fuel tank (autolube) £60 Fuel guage sender (could get away with out it) £40 Fuel tap. £10 Wiring loom £30 All cables £25 Speedo £70 Complete standard carb (everything inc manifold) £100 Exhaust £40 Seat £70 left side rear indicator lens. £3 gear selector box £18 2-3gears £70 125 cylinder and head and piston £80 Cruciform £9 crush drive repair kit £4 kick start idle gear £7 outer engine case £? battery £? all engine seals and gaskits £10 all gromets for the frame. £? as its in so many bits i would be mad to not do the paint job. But if i did pick up an engine (£200ish) so that just under £700 for the parts just under £400 for the none engine bits!!! and an unknown engine. Pete

Welcome to the wonderful world of scooter restoration Pete. Whenever you see a nice custom or restoration featured in Scootering, one of the questions the owner gets asked is what tips they can offer to someone else starting a project. If I had a pound for every time the answer was "Set yourself a budget, then double it", I'd be on my way to having the budget for a project.
My uncle's Lambretta GP's sitting in my garage at the moment looking a bit sorry for itself, but the majority of the work that needs doing is cosmetic. Just browsing through the Scooter Center Koln catalogue, I reckon he's looking at about £350 just to get the bodywork and parts he needs replacing, there's assembly time, then, like yourself, he'll need a respray on top of that. That said, for an investment of about a grand, he'll have a restored Italian GP that's worth about three times that much.
I think that's why so many projects are done on Lammy's, because the return's there on the investment. About 3k was spent buying and restoring my Sprint, and it's a beauty, but it's still only worth 2k tops now. Maybe now the PX is being discontinued, we'll see older Vespas go up in value as Lambrettas have.
The best advice I can offer is to join your local club if you haven't already. There's always someone with all sorts of bits and pieces tucked away at the back of the garage they were saving for a rainy day. A few times me or Lu have bought something from a dealer or off Ebay, only to have someone at the club say "you should have said; I've got loads of those in my garage I've had them for years etc"

Ive found a really helpful parts place in Sheffield (where I live) proper Italian too!!! Family business, they took one look at the engine before i took it to bits and said 'evey man and his dogs been in that, I could sell you a brand new genuine out of the box engine ready to run for £700' But i like a challenge (well until I found the cracked case). After spending 3hrs looking through ebay last night Ive come up with a plan. Im going to get all the body done up, get it all ready for an engine to bolt in. I was wanting to get this built up by the end of the month (easy if the engine wasnt U/S). Ill just keep my eye out for a lump that hasn't been messed with, get it, strip it replace all the seal and bearings, clutch etc then drop it in. Ive seen an engine in Brighton currently at 99p, no head, piston or cylinder. But if the case is ok ive got a starting point again. Good thing about the Landrover forum I play on is we do relays, there is a guy down there who would pick it up for me, then it will slowly work its way up the country as people pass by. That or ill get it from him at the end of July at a big landrover meet.

I'm sure you could pick up a running complete (with carb & exh) PX engine for £150, that would be cheaper than the parts you list..
Would not pay £100 for a std carb (there is no manifold btw), standard 125 carb is not worth a lot second hand, speedo should be cheaper also..

im just going off the prices ive found online rounded to the £. I know i should be able to get some bits cheeper but using the web prices it covers things like all the gromets, oil, clips etc.
yeah its finding an engine... then if its got a leak or a bit worn ill end up stripping and doing that up.
