I'm going to be putting the HB 207 motor in my P2 soon so I'm looking for suggestions on how best to run it in ie. Speeds, distances, type of oil to use etc?
PS its a cast iron barrel
Thanks
Shaun

Ask Harry, he's the one building the engine, it's his advice I would take over anyone elses. If only because he can't then point the finger if something breaks.

Yes, ask Harry B. If you follow his procedures and there's 'an issue' then that's one less thing to bring into the conversation. Ask ten scooter riders how they run in an engine and you'll get ten answers varying from someone I know who will cane it right from the offset to Nik here who'll probably run it in for, what, about a 1,000 miles I think you said in another thread isn't it Nik? I think a lot depends on who is paying for the (potential) repair bills!!!!

Have asked harry and its me building the engine btw 30-40mph for 300 miles round town type riding using good semi synth pretty basic spoke with scott the Rayspeed mechanic who runs a HB polini set up with 60mm crank recommends 1000 miles using a mineral oil so a bit confused tbh and as I state in my first post I was losoking for suggestions that's all but if you feel unwilling to help I'll try elsewhere no probs, however as kru mentions recalling nik saying 1000 miles in a previous thred I struggle to understand the reluctance other than pre emptive book passing...but as I say fine I'll try elsewhere no probs!

5 to 600 miles, 30 to 40mph for the first 300 miles, mostly around town with plenty of gear changing. On an iron barrel use bog standard mineral oil to run in........ I know it sounds daft but semi/fully synthetic is too slippy and doesn't allow the rings to scrub properly.

Sounds like you have enough advice on oil and distance.
As the last thread on running in - The biggest issue by far is the mixture. While running in make sure the main jet is running richer than you normally would and the needle is lifted one notch too much also.
Almost all running in heat seizing is mixture related!

Ok thanks for the advice mate I was aware of allowing the engine to run rich and will be upjettitiing the standard carb to do so i was just trying to get a better idea of oils speeds and distances the Cambridge Lambretta site has some useful info for running in cast iron barrels so will probably follow that cheers

Pxguru is right. Make sure it's rich on the main jet. Don't be fooled into just adding 'extra oil' etc as that has the opposite effect by the oil burning hotter and leaning the mixture off as more oil = less fuel with same amount of air passing through. Good luck.

Yup, 1000 miles on a full build, a lot less on a new top end. I think I also said at the time that I know I'm over cautious, but I'd rather that than fix the damn thing... Remember who builds my engines? I've no one to take it back to!
