I have heard, and since verified for myself the news about pre 1960 vehicles being exempt from annual MOT laws. This means from this year,if you have a pre `60 car or scooter,it will be exempt from an annual MOT test.
Now,i am all for our government giving us working men & women some good news BUT im not too sure about what effect it will have on our scene.
Now,we are known to love our scooters, spend thousands of quids on them, and hundreds of hours in the shed just looking at them, and more importantly, keeping them road worthy is usually a priority for most of us.
Maybe we will see more police patrols just doing a "routine stop" when they see a pre 60 vehicle passing them en route to a weekend rally.
What are your thoughts on this??? Is it a good thing for us owners,or will some "WRONG TYPES" try and buy up the few remaining pre 60 scoots and not even care about bold tyres, broken bulbs etc, which would then give the genuine scooterist a bad name??

Craig,
Thanks for the information mate, thats very interesting. Can you point me in the right place for authoritative literature on the subject?
I have just purchased a 1959 Vespa 150 Clubman, hence the interest. By the way, could you advise a rich source of information regarding this model - would help me in restoration.
Cheers

It's definately right - Scootering magazine covered it in brief in the current issue.
My opinion is that it's bloody stupid. Yes, there are a lot of scooters, bikes and cars that are lovingly restored and maintained by their owners, but there are also a lot of them that are bodged and lashed up (ESPECIALLY on the scooter scene!).
Purely from a safety point of view, I think this is a daft idea.

coming from a classic car and bike background it's stupid, would have been better to re-introduce exemption from VED (road tax) for vehicles over 25 years instead of the registered before '73
