Hi - I have a Vespa 50 1973 that im currently restoring. The bike dosn't have a brake light, speedo or indicators. Do i have to fit these to register the bike on UK roads? I would rather not do this as would like to keep it original. Any advice would be a great help.
Thanks

Speedo yes, brake light yes, indicators no.
You used to be able to get around the first two, but the law was changed... I assume it's a European import?

Thank you for the advice. Yes it is from Italy. Is the speedo easy to fit? Would I have to change the front hub?
Cheers

You've a blanking plate in the handlebars? It should just prise out. As for the speedo drive question, I've no idea sorry, take a look to see if there is a rubber gommit on the top of the hub blanking off the drive.

Just wondering. Would the 'friendly' MOT man pass it with a digital, wired speedo unit bought for use with pushbikes be acceptable? Actually very accurate as you can calibrate the exact rolling circumference (you know, chalk mark on tyre and ground, roll it exactly one revolution on the ground and chalk mark again. Set the unit to the distance between chalk marks. Discreet and could be just velcroed in place somewhere visible. I dunno, but would have thought this OK.

Digitals are nice, accurate combined with GPS are the way to go. I don't know the laws here in the states versus UK, but I am sure some tree hugger wouldn't approve if the speedo wasn't permanently attached. Good Luck, Hope all works out well getting your scoot on the road. Another thought, are the laws in UK any more lenient for 50cc or less machines (I recently bought a 2005 PX 150 that never had certificate of origin paperwork filed. The original owner removed external markings and registered as Low powered motorized vehicle. Unless it's noticed the registration for a plated bike (1 year renewal) vs low powered (3 year renewal) stickered one is considerably less expensive. Also low powered vehicles can be parked on side walks room permitting.
