Hello all I'm new here, so beaar with me I have finally convinced the missus that I should get a vespa again (my PX 125 was written off by a car about 10 years ago and was never replaced) and I have decided that I want a restored classic vespa. I have found this website... www.classicretroscooters.co.uk/... and the restored VBBs look like just the ticket, but of course I am anxious about paying the cash without hearing any reviews or advice from more experienced scooterists. Have any of you ever heard of them and can you advise me whether or not they are any good? I know that a nice paint job doesn't equate to a good ride and I will need a reliable runner as I am no mechanic. My heart says go for it, but my head says consider another PX 125 as the engine is less likely to fall out. Any advice? I live in SE London and am also considering Scooterworks in Southwark. Thanks all!

... basically, I'm worried that they are Vietnam imports made of papier mache with nice paint and a £3000 price tag.
I really am 50:50 between a classic restoration vs new PX 125. but nervous about buying a shocker after being wooed by the shiny paint and lovely lines.
Any words of wisdom?

welcome fella....them there restored vespas are WAY overpriced wether their italian or whatever mate ..if you don't know whos built em' or whats inside em' ( dont take the dealers word )..go for a PX or LML ...if your really after a restored VBB , you should be paying half the price what their asking ! i could name & shame loads'a "reputable" dealers who buy in & sell off as their own "restored" scoots. shop around a bit pal..sure you'll find something

Welcome. PX every time. I wouldn't touch those other things with a bargepole. The crappy chrome accessories (those wheeltrim things ) even the classic vietbodge signature of the yellow stand feet on some of them. I thought they'd used all them, they must have some left over. Do yourself a favour and get the PX.

DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THE BLOODY THINGS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
Simple as that.

Haha, brilliant!
Cheers for the responses everyone - you confirmed my suspicions. Of course we don't know FOR CERTAIN that these are Vietbodges, but the odds are not looking favourable!
I will continue to lust after the beautiful genuine restorations, but common sense tells me that a new PX is the way forward.
Now, do I go red or blue... Better decide before the missus changes her mind about agreeing to the purchase!

TBH an LML is a better bet than a PX125.
It's exactly the same scooter but with better bodywork and paint.
I'd not touch a P125 these days, the quality has seriously gone to the wall.
But I'm not supposed to say that.

You say you wouldn't touch one as quality has gone to the wall - is this the voice of experience? Did you get one and have problems? If there are some good/some bad then what would a potential buyer have to look out for? Apologies if this is covered elsehwere in the forum - I am ducking in and out when the boss isn't looking.

i posted this last year pal..have a read..... MY OPINION IS...Vespa realised that they dropped a bollock when they stopped manufacturing the PX and now they want to have the punters pants down by giving them a new seat and hand grips with" Vespa" written on them and for this privilege you get to pay the thick end of 3 grand....whoopy do........ LML have really got their act together over the last few years. The paintwork IS superior to the PX. LML have also gone the extra mile and squeezed a 4 stroke engine into the frame that is not much different to the 2 stroke frame. think about it matey.....
based on the FACT ,that everyone who,s bought a lml scooter is most impressed.with the product ,ie finished item ,compared with the sh*t piaggio have bin flogin for the past couple o years.remember piaggio s.p.a is a bloody big company ,and don,t give a toss about customer satisfaction, all they want to do is SELL mopeds/shoppin bikes....
that, my own experience and scootering magazine 3 grand is a hell of a lot of dosh, plus you'll probably spend another few hundred getting it how you like it ...
the lml build quality is far superior to that of piaggio...not everyone will agree with me cos' its not ITALIAN, but look into it before you decide mate.... ...AND, NO, I DON'T WORK FOR LML ! i'm an engineer who wants to save a bloke some hard earnd cash

The PX quality went down around 10 years ago. I've not had a P125 in that time, but I do have a 51 plate P200.
Within eight months the paint was peeling off the handlebars, any chrome that wasn't plastic was rusting, there were bubbles coming through the paint where it hadn't been properly primered. This is a scooter which is now a ratter as I stopped caring about it's shininess! I complained to the Piaggio dealer (run by old school scooterists too) and got told that paint and chrome were only guaranteed for six months! Can you imagine Ford or Volkswagen telling their customers that? Nope - Piaggio can get away with it though as they can continue to sell on their name. The electrics caught fire at about two years. The disk brake - whilst a welcome addition - causes white knuckle at about 40mph (a well documented onservation) but bar end weights cured that.
Shortly after, my then girlfriend bought an LML 125. The bodywork felt more solid when ridden (no, not her - the scooter!) than my P2, the paint was deeper and in better condition than my by then 12 month old P2, despite being four times the age!
OK, the electrics on that were a bit crap but at least they didn't catch fire...
If you want a 2-stroke Vespa, look around for a recent second hand LML. They're essentially the same engine as a P range, so easy to work on, but as they're not a Vespa they're a lot easier to buy cheap.
One thing though - please don't take the LML badges off and replace them with Vespa ones, it's the height of naff-ness. Be proud of owning an LML!

I didn't realise they'd gone so bad Nik. My P2 is 12 years old, looks like I got one of the last good ones.

If I ever run into you, take a look under the handlebars. I've left them as they are on purpose to show people how completely sh*t the paint is. If you don't know my bike, it's a silver P2 with (old style) red Leigh Centurions RLC logos on the side panels, a black Utah and a flip over back rest. One thing I will give the P2 is that the seat is the best that I've had on any scooter in 30 years, the original has worn out now so I have a nice beige one that goes sooooo well with the silver paint.

Forgot to mention the other stickers Here she is: A thing of beauty... that's after the hammerite paint job last year, there's a photo of it with black paint highlighting the bubbling paint, but I got bored of explaining why it was there.

Mr Benjo Go for the LML....I have and havent regretted it. There are some that say its a Bag O Shyte, but youll always get that....Dont be put off. Choice of 2T or 4T(something that Piaggio doesnt) admittedly, they do have faults, but so do PX,s....no matter what the Vespa snobs say. Heres a link to the LML Owners Club Gb of which Im an active(if mickytaking) member. www.lmlocgb.co.uk/phpBB3/index.phpShaun..
