Hello Just getting back into scootering and obviously Vespa all the way for my wheels. What has suprised me though is this new badged Vespa called the Vespa LML! After a little work I have found out that its not a Vespa at all.l I wonder how many people without knowledge have brought these machines thinking they are purchasing a Vespa or on the pretence that it is a vespa when they are advertised as Vespa LML is it not like advertising BMW SKODA and why on these LML websites do nearly all the scooters get re-badged as a Vespa I even read on one site of a LML owner who wanted to change the speedometer etc just to get the vespa badge! Bizarre!.What I really cannot understand is that these machines are getting good write ups and creating a name for themselves in their own right so why do they have to belittle themselves by coming across as Vespa rip offs when surely they should be seen a model of bike on there own? I just wondered what people on this sites opinions are?I admit I am a snob and I wont purchase one as I have always had vespas, just as I wouldnt wear copy adidas trainers etc.

Welcome to the forum Hood.
I'm not sure they should be advertised as Vespa LML's, strictly speaking they aren't a Vespa, they are a completely separate company. In a similar way that a SIL Lambretta isn't an Innocenti Lambretta, an LML is the Indian version of the Italian Vespa.
They are basically the same though, or at least the 125cc is the same as the PX125 (apart from some strangulation to meet emission regs) so I believe it's only badge snobbery that sets them apart. I think most of us have a bit of that though. Given a like for like choice, I'd go for the Vespa every time. I can't explain why though without sounding like a girl.
What I do find odd, and a little sinister, is people who change the badges etc to make it look more like a Vespa, or should that be to fool people into paying a bit more for it because it has the 'coolness' associated with the brand name? But if you were someone who has seen the adverts on the telly with Vespas in and has more money than sense to splash on a 'cool' bike, you are ripe for the picking. Others can discuss the ethics involved. I'm sure there are just people who want to kid people that they have a Vespa rather than it's Indian cousin. See also people with 'personalised' reg's on their cars - weirdo's.
As with a Lambretta, the origin can often be given away by the registration number being after a certain date. This is true of brand new machines today, as the Vespa PX hasn't been manufactured for a while now.
It will be interesting to see how the soon to be released 4-stroke 200cc one goes and sells.

I pick up a brand new super next monday I'll get it re badged to a LML!No I wont because if I wanted a LML i'd of brought one.Im sorry I just really find it hard to get my head around it .On these sites they say there proud to be an LML club and proud of there rides well why bloody disguise the fact of what you are riding? An argument I have read on such sites is that vespa's have sold out by not producing geared machines,I agree to a degree actually, well they should be proud then that they are riding a new geared machine and be proud that it's not a Vespa but are thse people aware that most scooterists are aware of this fact so any new vespa riding around is a LML not Vespa. STOP PUTTING THE BADGE ON A LML PRETENDING THAT YOUR RIDING A SCOOTER THAT HAS SOLD OUT (in your opinion.) As stated I have nothing against LML's. But why oh why do others try to imitate vespa's. I do not have a problem with my children running around being ninja turtles, but if they were doing so in there forties then thats a different ball game. AD.

Yes its a funny old world , it really doesnt bother me what badges people try to stick on thier scooters as long as they are not trying to decieve or rip people off . There are many Vijay Supers badged up a Gp,s no one seems to mind . I have both a Vespa and an LML when I aquired it it was badged up as a Vespa now it carries no badges apart from a Piagio one on the horncover when I find an LML one it will be changed . Vespa have,nt sold out IMO they are just following market forces and are hardly likely to be to worried about a bunch of mad quirky enthusiasts in the UK .

It's an interesting question, why would someone put a vespa badge on a LML. Because he loves Vespa's so much , he wants to honor the name? maybe some sort of weird homage? but why not buy it in the first place? because of the price difference?

yeah, there's a lad in our club with his LML badged vespa ::)just gets the p*ss take all of the time ;D...I myself bought a 1979 150 bajaj ( sportique clone ) which was badged up as a vespa, ...got on e-bay & bought some bajaj badges & replaced em', cos thats what it is, crackin' old scoot, proud it's indian ;D

i think i would do the same. i mean even a clone could have its charm, but as soon as you try to patch it up with badges that dont belong on it, thats when the imitation/homage becomes a farce

I bought a Bajaj a while back to get me back into scootering,at the times Vespas were going for silly prices.I have to say she was really well built, well engineered, and could keep up with most 150s.Ido agree there is a certain amount of stigma attached to these clones, its usually the expressions of others.I did rebadge mine so i felt that i could FIT IN,after being away from the scene for many years i notice that there is still a fair amount of bitching.Im just pleased that i have learnt to take others as they come and except whatever they ride, ride free and safe to all.

Paul if their bitching about you then fine, who cares? are they worth worrying about pal?abit like my opinion really! I just struggle to phathom how people get these scoots set there own club of Great Britain up which to me is saying Hey this is my ride, my status symbol, I have an LML and I am proud to ride an LML. I say fair play to you be proud thats why your in the LML OWNERS CLUB of Great Britain .I dont think they can be very proud to say I'm in the LML OWNERS CLUB of Great Britain but I'm abit embarressed and abit ashamed because it's an LML so Ive taken all the badges off and stuck Vespa badges on to try and hide my scoots identity.Have a look on the web site profile one question is regarding modenisation's to their ride , very little mention of paint jobs etc but a few have even put down as a modernisation, get ready.......RE- BADGED TO VESPA!!! MODERNISATION? :oHmmmmmmmmmmmm? Its very sad.

Dont really think its appropriate to slate another forums members or thier views on here . Why dont you join their forum and ask them yourself ?
Dont really understand why you are getting upset , I ride an LML and have never met any prejudice or snide comments of anyone , life is far to short its just not important

What ever happended to freedom of speach? I'm not getting upset I can assure you of that on my mate.A lad in our club has an LML and he always its cos he prefers the vespa name and kudos to LML! maybe you can answer some of the questions then, why do they re-badge their scooters then I'm on a vespa site discussing vespa related topics I have asked previously on LML sites but had simular topics deleted Is your LML badged as a vespa or are you proud to own an LML?I have a vespa and Im proud to own a vespa so I dont re-badge it as a lam or an LML.I have yet to hear a decent arguement for re-badging an LML to vespa .If I had a LML I would keep it as an LML.Can you tell me if your log book says Vespa LML , LMl or Vespa?.HOOD. (I'm just on my way to buy a skoda and Ive ordered my bmw badges off e-bay. )

It's good to talk! ;D I just hope its still alright to talk about scooters and VESPA's on vespa.com after all I do have a vespa that I like discussing on a site that I thought was designed for scooterists to use and freely express their opinions in a adult manner even if they sometimes may be not agreed with and as the site is called vespa.com.which when I registered I believed was a site to discuss vespa's and related issues. Do you agree? or shall we discuss Darwin or Einsteins theory of the relativity of light? I genuinely did not mean to offend any scooterists which I think if you read the context of my posts was not slagging LML/owners in any way shape or form other than just asking for other scooterists opinions on why people feel the need to buy something and then set about changing and even calling it by a different name. Can someone tell me what Vespa.com is for if not to discuss vespa's etc?

My log book says LML . I dont know of anybody that has the original API or Vijay Super badges on their scoots neither at the end of the day its their choice . To me I am not proud of my LML any more than I am proud of my Vespa and you know what they say "pride comes before a fall" ride safe mate

;DTHANKYOU AT LAST! You see my point! I like LML's they are LML's I like VESPA'S they are VESPA'S not VESPA LML's! Could it be possible that people with LML's are embarressed by having an LML and if so why?that is all I am asking can someone that owns an LML explain to me why they they feel the need to re-badge their scooter?people do not re-badge cars except for the silly lil'carlosvandango types with go fast stripes and R- type badges on a car that is obviously a civic L or something.I dont think thats it that mindset with LML owners but just what is the psyche that hones a LML owner to giving it such a "modification" I AM NOT TRYING TO PUT ANYONE DOWN I AM A SUPPORTER of the minority at school my mates used to get bullied so I used to batter the bullies simple Last night I watched notts v chesterfield the biggest derby of the season 1-0 get in! walking down the road afterwards I saw some notts lads battering a chesterfield fan so me and my mates had the notts fans!We are Notts!but no need to do the underdog. . I just cannot understand why re-badge.Be proud! I think I might get a LML and paint it in the indian flag colours good eh!good colours! Not put vespa badges on and paint it in italian colours or and sign off on websites with things like, made in italy thrashed in england.ITS NOT! AAArrrrggggghhhhhhhh! were's me beata blockers! ;D

Time for me to step in here I think.
For starters, the name of the website is vespa.org.uk, not vespa.com, which is an official Piaggio site. Anyone not wanting to upset any apple carts or cause offence should familiarise themselves with the forum policy, which can be found in the Announcements section.
People choose LML Stars for a number of reasons. Sometimes it's because they're more reasonably priced than a Piaggio Vespa. Sometimes, as someone's already alluded, it's because Piaggio no longer make the PX upon which the LML Star is based, and they want a new scooter. Whatever the reason, it's really up to the individual what they do with their scooter, and we've always prided ourselves here on not slagging people off because their tastes may differ from our own. Before you go off again Hood, I'm not saying you're slagging anyone off. People can just take unintentional offence sometimes.
Whenever I've come into contact with LML Stars, I've always found them to have a tinny sound or a ring or squeak to them that I've never heard from a Piaggio Vespa, but that's just my opinion. For every person that says they think the LML's crap, you'll get another one that says it's great. But I'll say one thing for them, apart from the Vespa T5, the LML Sar 125 is the only scooter you can take a full bike test on thanks to its (stated) top speed.
